Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Well
By 4:00 a.m., the three of us were crammed into the cab of Ethan’s Ford F-250, driving south down back roads toward Manhattan. The rain had slowed to a dreary drizzle.
Ethan drove with one hand on the wheel, his jaw set hard. On the seat between us lay the ledger, along with a flash drive he had managed to pull from his office server before fleeing the house.
"It’s worse than just cheap steel," Ethan said as we crossed the state line. "I analyzed the chemical testing files Julian saved on the private server. The foundation concrete used in the suburban residential developments Vance Construction built in New Jersey five years ago was mixed with industrial fly ash."
I turned to him, horrified. "Fly ash? That contains heavy metals, lead, arsenic..."
"It’s toxic," Ethan confirmed grimly. "Julian bought cheap byproduct from a chemical manufacturing plant, processed it through a fake recycling firm, and used it to pour foundations for three hundred family homes. He saved millions on materials while exposing hundreds of families to toxic off-gassing."
"Does Eleanor know about the chemical waste?" Sienna asked quietly.
"She authorized the contract," Ethan replied flatly. "She signed the release order herself when Julian was in rehab four years ago."
The magnitude of the corruption was staggering. This was no longer just a story of marital infidelity or executive embezzlement; it was a decades-long criminal enterprise built on corporate negligence, environmental poisoning, and public endangerment.

"If we go to the local authorities, Eleanor’s legal team will tie this up in preliminary injunctions for years," I said, watching the gray skyline of New York City emerge through the mist ahead. "We need to go straight to the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York."
"I have a contact there," Ethan said. "A college classmate who works in the environmental crimes division. But we need to make sure Julian doesn't wake up and destroy the primary database before they serve the search warrants."
