Chapter 7 - Betrayal at the Gala

The next evening, the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan was filled with high-society patrons, politicians, and news cameras for the annual Vance Foundation Charity Gala. Eleanor Vance was scheduled to deliver the keynote address.

Despite the tragedy surrounding her family, Eleanor was a master of optics. Her PR team had released a statement earlier that day claiming Julian had suffered a sudden, tragic cardiac event brought on by overwork, and that the family was rallying together in prayer.

Inside the glittering ballroom, crystal chandeliers threw sparkling light across women in evening gowns and men in tuxedos.

Eleanor stood at the center of the room, flanked by two city council members, wearing a emerald silk gown and her signature double strand of South Sea pearls. She smiled gracefully for the photographers, her expression calm, perfectly composure maintained.

She didn't know that Clara, wearing a black lace dress with a high collar, had slipped past security using a guest pass provided by an insider contact.

I stood near the back curtains, my heart hammering against my ribs. In my purse was a wireless media receiver connected directly to the venue’s main AV projection system. Out in the parking garage, Ethan and two federal agents were monitoring the signal.

When Eleanor stepped up to the podium, the room fell silent. The applause was polite, reverent.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Eleanor began, her voice smooth, dripping with practiced warmth. "Tonight, as we gather to support youth education in our great city, my heart is heavy with a mother's concern. My eldest son, Julian, lies in a hospital bed, fighting for his life..."

I pulled the remote trigger in my handbag and pressed the blue button.

The large projector screens behind Eleanor flickered. The presentation showing photos of children's hospitals instantly vanished, replaced by high-resolution scans of forged structural safety logs, offshore banking statements, and photos of toxic chemical dumping manifests signed by Eleanor and Julian Vance.

Gasps rippled through the audience of three hundred guests. Cameras began flashing rapidly.

Eleanor stopped speaking midsentence. She turned around slowly, her face going ghostly white as she stared up at her own signature next to a five-million-dollar bribe line item labeled Hudson River Inspection Clearance.

"Turn that off!" Eleanor demanded into the microphone, her voice shaking with rage. "Turn it off immediately!"

I stepped out from behind the velvet curtains, walking down the center aisle toward the stage.

"You can't turn off the truth, Eleanor," I said loudly, my voice echoing through the sound system. "The U.S. Marshals are waiting outside."
