Chapter 3 - The Broken Seal

The dry desert wind howled against the windows of the security control room. It was 3:00 AM, but no one in the Blackwell mansion was sleeping.
Adrian, Marcus, and Evelyn stood around a metallic table displaying a digital map of the Phoenix metro area. Red nodes highlighted the shipping routes controlled by the Blackwell Syndicate, while blue nodes marked the Valenti territory to the north.
"Vance’s transmitter was active during the dinner," Marcus reported, pointing to a data log on his screen. "We intercepted the signal. He was broadcasting our location and headcount directly to a secure server in Scottsdale. The server is owned by a shell company under Aethelgard's umbrella."
"He's trying to coordinate a strike," Adrian said, his face cold. "He thinks I’m weak because of the car bomb. He wants to show Valenti he can deliver my head on a silver platter."
"Then we strike first," Marcus said, his hand resting on his weapon. "We take Vance out tonight. We make an example of him."
"No," Evelyn interrupted.
Both men looked at her. Marcus frowned, but Adrian merely raised an eyebrow, waiting for her reasoning.
"If you kill Vance tonight, Valenti will know his double agent is burned," Evelyn explained, pointing to the map. "He will close his shipping lanes and go into hiding. But if we feed Vance false information—tell him we are moving a highly sensitive cargo of medical supplies through the southern pass tomorrow night—Valenti will try to hijack it. He will bring his core forces out into the open."
Adrian looked at the map, then at Evelyn. A slow, dangerous smile spread across his face. "The Trojan horse. You want to lure Victor Valenti into a bottleneck."
"Exactly," Evelyn said. "But to make it believable, the cargo needs to look real. Aethelgard is desperate for TX-9 precursor chemicals. If we leak that we intercepted a shipment of those precursors, Valenti won't be able to resist."
"I can acquire the chemical canisters from a contact in San Diego," Adrian said. "But we need someone who can verify their authenticity to Vance’s scouts. Someone who looks like they know how to handle high-value pharmaceuticals."
"I'll go," Evelyn said without hesitation.
"No," Adrian said instantly, his voice sharp and absolute. "You are not leaving this mansion, Evelyn. It’s too dangerous. If Valenti’s men recognize you—if they realize who you are—they won't just kill you. They will take you back to Aethelgard."
"I survived three years in the dark, Adrian," she said, using his first name for the first time. The sound of it made him pause, his dark eyes softening for a fraction of a second. "I am not afraid of them anymore. If we want to destroy them, we have to take risks. I am the only one who can make this look real."
Adrian stared at her, his jaw clenching. He took a step closer, his voice dropping to a low, intense whisper that only she could hear.
"You don't understand, Evelyn," he said, his hand rising to touch her shoulder, his grip firm but surprisingly warm. "If anything happens to you... if I let them take you... I wouldn't just lose an advisor. I would lose the only person in this house who looks at me like a man, and not a monster."
Evelyn’s breath hitched in her throat. The intensity of his gaze was suffocating, pulling her in. She realized then that the walls she had built around her heart for three years were starting to crumble. Adrian Blackwell, the feared crime lord of Phoenix, was becoming her sanctuary.
"I will be careful," she whispered, her hand rising to rest gently over his. "I promise."

Adrian looked down at her hand on his chest, his eyes darkening with an emotion he couldn't hide. He let out a slow breath, nodding reluctantly.
"Marcus," Adrian ordered, not looking away from Evelyn. "Assemble the elite team. We move tomorrow night. And if so much as a single scratch touches Dr. Sterling, I will personally burn this city to the ground."
