Chapter 7 - Crimson Alliances

To take down a fortress like the Aethelgard facility, Adrian needed more than just his own men. He needed to unite the fractured factions of the Phoenix underground.

The meeting was set at a neutral location—an abandoned copper mine in the desert hills of Apache Junction.

Adrian sat in a customized armored SUV, his shoulder supported by a sleek black brace Evelyn had designed for him. Evelyn sat beside him, holding a secure tablet containing the blueprint of the Aethelgard research compound.

"The faction leaders are skittish," Adrian warned her as they waited for the arrivals. "They’ve heard rumors about TX-9. Some of them are terrified that Valenti will use the chemical weapon on their families if they side with me."

"Then we show them we have the antidote," Evelyn said, holding up a small glass vial containing a clear blue liquid. "My father was working on a synthesized peptide that reverses the cellular damage caused by TX-9. I finished his research in the mansion’s lab yesterday. This is the cure, Adrian. If we can manufacture this, Valenti’s weapon is useless."

Three black SUVs pulled into the dusty mining camp.

Out stepped the three remaining leaders of the Phoenix Syndicate: Hector Cruz, the head of the southern docks; Ronald Vance (who had taken over Donald Vance’s territory after Donald was caught trying to flee the state); and Sophia Moretti, the cold-eyed queen of the east-valley narcotics trade.

They gathered around a rusted metal table inside the mine’s dilapidated office.

"Adrian," Sophia said, her voice sharp as glass. "We heard about the warehouse. You nearly got yourself killed over a maid."

"She is not a maid, Sophia," Adrian said, his voice cold and commanding. "She is Dr. Evelyn Sterling. And she is the only reason your families aren't going to die of pulmonary hemorrhage next week."

Hector Cruz frowned. "What are you talking about, Blackwell?"

Evelyn stepped forward, placing the glass vial on the table. She opened her tablet, projecting a 3D model of the human lungs affected by TX-9.

"Victor Valenti isn't just trying to take over the shipping lanes," Evelyn explained, her voice carrying the absolute authority of a world-class physician. "He is preparing to release an aerosolized version of TX-9 in the southern shipping docks to clear out Hector’s workers and replace them with his own automated crews. The drug causes rapid respiratory failure within six hours of exposure. No mask will protect you; it absorbs through the skin."

The three leaders went pale. Hector Cruz slammed his hand on the table. "That bastard! He’d murder my entire crew?"

"Yes," Evelyn said. "But this vial contains the synthesized peptide that neutralizes the compound. I can mass-produce this inside Hector’s warehouses within twenty-four hours. But we need to destroy the primary manufacturing facility at Aethelgard before they can weaponize the gas."

Sophia Moretti looked at the vial, then at Evelyn, and finally at Adrian. "If we help you take the facility, Blackwell, what do we get?"

"You get your territories back, free of Valenti’s poison," Adrian said, leaning forward. "And you get a cut of the new, legitimate pharmaceutical distribution network we will build under Dr. Sterling’s supervision. The Blackwell Syndicate is going clean, gentlemen. The age of poison is over."

The three leaders looked at each other. The sheer force of Adrian’s leadership, combined with Evelyn’s brilliant scientific defense, left them with only one logical choice.

Hector Cruz raised his hand. "I’m in."

"Me too," Sophia said, a faint smile touching her lips. "I’ve always preferred clean money anyway."
