Chapter 6 - The Desert Sanctuary

The private medical clinic inside Adrian Blackwell’s mansion was hidden behind a false bookshelf in the basement—a state-of-the-art facility that Evelyn hadn't known existed.
For three hours, Evelyn worked under the bright surgical lights.
Her hands were steady, her mind completely focused as she debrided the wound, removed seven jagged pieces of lead shot, and meticulously repaired the torn muscle fibers. Adrian was under deep sedation, his breathing steadying as the monitor beeped in a comforting, regular rhythm.
When she finally placed the last suture and bandaged his shoulder, she felt her knees go weak. She slid onto a stool, burying her face in her hands as the adrenaline finally left her body.
A soft knock sounded on the door. Marcus entered, carrying two cups of black coffee. He placed one before her.
"How is he?" Marcus asked, his voice unusually soft.
"He's stable," Evelyn said, taking a sip of the hot liquid. "He lost a lot of blood, but the muscle damage is repairable. He will make a full recovery. He just needs rest."
Marcus nodded, looking down at the sleeping crime boss. "I’ve been with Adrian for ten years, Doc. I’ve seen him get shot, stabbed, and betrayed. But I’ve never seen him look at someone the way he looks at you. He would have died in that warehouse tonight if you hadn't been there."
"I only did my job," she murmured.
"No, you didn't," Marcus said, looking her in the eye. "You could have run. When the shooting started, you could have slipped away into the dark and vanished. But you stayed to help him. You’re one of us now, Evelyn. Whether you like it or not."
Evelyn looked at Adrian’s peaceful face. She realized Marcus was right. She didn't want to run anymore. For three years, she had been a ghost, running from her past. But here, in this house, she had found a purpose. She had found a man who made her feel alive.
Three days later, Adrian awoke.
The afternoon sun was streaming through the high windows of his master bedroom. Evelyn was sitting in a chair beside his bed, reading a medical journal.
When he moved, she was instantly on her feet, checking his vitals.
"Don't move," she ordered gently. "Your sutures are still fresh."
Adrian looked at her, a faint, warm smile touching his lips. "You saved me again, Dr. Sterling."
"I told you I would," she said, her voice soft.
Adrian reached out with his uninjured arm, his fingers wrapping around hers. He pulled her gently toward him until she was sitting on the edge of the mattress.
"The Valentis are in retreat," Adrian said quietly. "We took out half their leadership in the warehouse. But Thomas Vance and Victor Valenti escaped. They’ve gone to ground at the Aethelgard research facility in the north. They’re desperate, Evelyn. They know the city council vote is in forty-eight hours. If they can’t kill me, they will try to destroy everything."
"Then we stop them," Evelyn said, her eyes flashing with determination. "I have the files my father left. I know how to access Aethelgard's secure servers. If we can get inside that facility, we can download the original, unedited clinical trials for TX-9. We can expose them to the FDA and the federal authorities. We can destroy Aethelgard and the Valentis in one move."
Adrian looked at her, his eyes burning with an intense, protective love. He reached up, his hand gently cupping her neck, pulling her down until their foreheads touched.
"We do it together," Adrian whispered. "And when this is over, Evelyn... you won't have to hide anymore. I will make sure the world knows your father was a hero. And I will make sure you get your life back."
May you like
"I don't want my old life back, Adrian," she whispered, her eyes shining. "I want the life I have here. With you."
Adrian’s breath caught. He tilted her face up, his lips meeting hers in a deep, desperate kiss that carried all the unspoken promises of their dangerous, beautiful future.
