Chapter 5 - The Swiss Ledger

The SUV moved swiftly through the city, crossing the bridge into New Jersey before settling into a quiet, blacked-out garage beneath a private residential estate in Alpine.
Inside the brightly lit, sterile kitchen of the safehouse, Henri Laurent sat across from Tessa, pouring two cups of black tea. Wren was sitting on a plush sofa in the adjacent room, wrapped in a fleece blanket, eating a bowl of warm soup under the watchful eye of Laurent’s private security detail.
"Where is Marcus? Where is Nora?" Tessa demanded, her hands shaking as she gripped her teacup.
"My team pulled Mr. Vance and Mrs. Gable out of your apartment thirty seconds after you exited the window," Laurent said calmly, sliding a secure tablet across the table to her. "They are currently in a private medical facility in Connecticut. Mr. Vance suffered a broken collarbone, but both will survive."
Tessa let out a long, ragged breath, sinking back into her chair. "Who are you?"
"I was your father-in-law’s personal attorney for thirty years," Laurent said, tapping the tablet screen. "And the sole executor of the Mercer Contingency Trust."
On the screen, a series of legal documents appeared, stamped with the seal of the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland.
"Arthur Mercer was not a saint, Mrs. Vance," Laurent explained, his voice low and solemn. "He built an empire on compromise. But eight years ago, when he discovered that Gavin had engineered the collapse of your father’s firm—and subsequently orchestrated your father’s 'suicide'—Arthur drew a line."
Tessa’s heart felt like it was being squeezed in a vise. "My father didn't kill himself?"
Laurent looked at her with profound, sorrowful eyes. "Your father found the off-shore accounts Gavin was using to launder money through your family's shipping lines. When your father threatened to go to the Department of Justice, Gavin ensured he never made it to the federal courthouse."
Laurent leaned forward, setting his palms flat on the table.
"Arthur couldn't bring himself to send his own son to prison while he was alive," Laurent continued. "So he made a deal with the Swiss courts. He transferred seventy percent of the family’s assets into a sealed trust. Under the terms of that trust, if Gavin attempts to assume control of Mercer Global after Arthur’s death, he must present the master encryption key—the device Arthur gave your daughter."
Tessa pulled the heavy brass cryptex from her pocket and set it on the glass table between them.
Laurent’s eyes widened slightly as he stared at the object. "The cipher."

"Gavin needs this to take control of the company," Tessa realized aloud. "Without it, on Wren's ninth birthday—September 12th—the trust automatically liquidates every Mercer asset and transfers the evidence of Gavin's crimes directly to the United States Attorney General."
"Precisely," Laurent nodded. "Gavin doesn't survive September because without that cryptex, he loses his money, his company, and his freedom in less than three weeks."
