Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the Microfilm

Laurent held his breath as Tessa slowly pulled the inner cylinder out of the brass casing.

Inside lay a small, high-density digital memory chip and a rolled strip of black-and-white 35mm microfilm.

Laurent immediately brought out a compact portable scanner, mounting the microfilm onto the glass stage. A high-resolution image flashed onto his laptop screen.

It was not a financial ledger.

It was a copy of a signed confession written in Gavin Mercer’s neat, arrogant handwriting, dated November 14, 2018.

Attached to the confession was a series of high-resolution crime scene photographs from a remote stretch of highway outside upstate New York—the scene of the car crash that had taken the life of Tessa’s father, David Vance.

The police report from eight years ago had stated David Vance died due to brake failure caused by mechanical fatigue during a snowstorm.

The photograph on the screen showed something entirely different: a silver sedan with its brake lines deliberately severed with a clean, high-precision hydraulic cutting tool, alongside a time-stamped security camera frame showing Marlowe Mercer standing in a garage fifteen minutes before David Vance drove off the lot.

Tessa felt her vision blur with dark, suffocating rage.

It wasn't just business. It wasn't just corporate fraud. Gavin and Marlowe had murdered her father in cold blood to cover up their financial theft, and then Gavin had walked into her life six months later, pretending to be her savior, comforting her through her grief, marrying her to keep her close where she could never ask questions.

"They killed him," Tessa choked out, tears finally streaming down her face. "He killed my dad... and then he made me love him."

Wren wrapped her small arms around Tessa’s neck, hugging her tightly. "Don't cry, Mommy. Grandpa said the picture would make the bad people go away."

Before Laurent could upload the files to the secure server, the emergency alarms inside the Alpine safehouse began to blare—a high-pitched electronic scream that turned the room red with flashing strobe lights.

The laptop screen flickered and died as a localized EMP pulse wiped the house's local power grid.

The heavy steel garage doors at the front of the estate exploded inward with a deafening roar, sending concrete dust and shattered iron flying through the air.
