Chapter 8 - The Siege of Alpine

"Security team! Fall back to the safe room!" Laurent shouted, drawing a sleek pistol from his shoulder holster as gunfire erupted in the outer hallway.

The door to the kitchen was kicked open.

Gavin Mercer walked through the smoke, wearing a dark tactical vest, his face smeared with soot, his eyes wild and bloodshot. Behind him stood Marlowe, holding a suppressed machine pistol, her face cold and unreadable.

"Hand over the drive, Henri," Gavin growled, raising his weapon toward Laurent. "It’s over. I tracked your driver’s transponder from the city."

Laurent didn't lower his gun. "You're insane, Gavin. The Swiss courts already hold the secondary verification. If you kill us, you confirm your own execution."

"The Swiss courts hold nothing without the physical key from this house," Marlowe spat, her voice tight with panic. "Gavin, shoot him!"

Gavin fired two rounds. Laurent collapsed to the floor with a groan, clutching his shoulder as dark blood pooled onto the white tile.

Tessa shielded Wren behind her body, backing up against the kitchen counter, her fingers wrapping around the heavy cast-iron skillet sitting on the stove.

Gavin stepped over Laurent’s bleeding form, stopping five feet from Tessa. He looked down at the cryptex sitting opened on the table, then up at Tessa’s eyes.

"You should have stayed out of it, Tessa," Gavin said, his voice trembling with a terrifying mix of regret and rage. "I gave you a good life. I bought you that apartment. I gave you a child. All you had to do was let me have custody for thirty days until the trust cleared!"

"You killed my father!" Tessa screamed, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. "You murdered him and you used me!"

Gavin’s face twitched. "David Vance was going to destroy Mercer Global! He was going to put my family in prison! I did what I had to do to survive!"

"He was an honest man!" Tessa yelled, stepping forward, ignoring the gun pointed at her chest. "And you are a pathetic, cowardly thief who threatens an eight-year-old girl because you're terrified of dying in a cell!"

Gavin’s jaw clenched. He raised the pistol, aiming it directly between Tessa’s eyes. "Give me the chip, Tessa."

From behind Gavin, a small voice broke through the tension.

"Dad?"

Gavin paused, his eyes shifting slightly to look at Wren, who stepped out from behind Tessa’s skirt, holding her small wooden music box in her hands.

"Wren... sweetie, stay back," Gavin said, his voice wavering for a fraction of a second.

"Grandpa told me you were sick," Wren said softly, her dark eyes filled with tears as she looked at her father. "He said you had a sickness in your heart that made you hurt people. I was scared of you... but Grandpa said I should pity you."

Gavin stared at his daughter, his hand holding the gun trembling visibly.

That fraction of a second was all Tessa needed.

Tessa swung the heavy cast-iron skillet with all the strength in her body, slamming it directly into the side of Gavin’s jaw.
