Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The silence hanging in the cavernous foyer of the Sterling Manor was so heavy it felt like lead.
The delicate crystal wine glass slipped from Evelyn’s manicured fingers, smashing violently against the polished Italian marble. Red wine splashed across the white stone like a crimson stain, soaking the hem of nineteen-year-old Maya’s faded grey maid uniform.
Maya remained on her knees, her breath hitching in her chest. Her hands, red and raw from hours of scrubbing bleach into the stone without gloves, trembled against the wet floor rag. Her long dark hair, usually neatly pinned, hung in loose, damp strands over her tear-streaked face.
Ten feet away stood Julian Vance.
He was dressed in a sharp, slate-grey three-piece suit, a heavy cashmere coat slung over his arm, looking every bit the ruthless billionaire tech mogul who controlled half the shipping logistics on the East Coast. He had been away in Europe for three months finalizing a historic multi-billion-dollar merger.
His dark eyes, usually cold and calculating, were wide with an emotion no one in the Vance family had ever seen before: utter, blinding terror.
"Maya...?" Julian’s voice cracked, a low, hoarse whisper that barely carried across the high ceilings.
The heavy leather briefcase fell from his hand, thudding uselessly against the stone. He didn't care. He took two slow, agonizing steps forward, his polished dress shoes stepping directly into the pool of red wine and shattered glass.
"What is this?" Julian demanded. His voice suddenly dropped into a register so dark, so deep, and so filled with explosive fury that the giant crystal chandeliers overhead seemed to rattle. He looked at Evelyn. "Evelyn... what is my daughter doing on her knees in a maid's uniform?"
Evelyn, a forty-year-old former high-fashion model who had married Julian fourteen months ago, stumbled backward against the mahogany console table. The radiant, arrogant smile she had worn just seconds before while sipping her wine had completely dissolved into a mask of pure, unadulterated panic.
"Julian! Darling, wait! Let me explain!" Evelyn stammered, her voice high and frantic as she clutched her pearl necklace. "It’s not what it looks like! Maya... Maya wanted to do this! She insisted!"
"She insisted?" Julian turned his head slowly toward his wife. The look in his eyes was so terrifyingly cold that Evelyn physically shrank back, her knuckles turning white against the mahogany.
Maya let out a ragged, suffocating sob. "Dad..."
That single word shattered whatever restraint Julian had left. He dropped to his knees right into the pool of wine and water, completely ignoring the stains ruining his five-thousand-dollar trousers. He wrapped his broad arms around his daughter, pulling her frail, shivering body tightly against his chest.

Up close, he could feel how thin she had become. He could smell the harsh industrial bleach on her skin, mixed with the smell of cheap soap. He pulled her raw, blistering hands into his own, his chest heaving as tears of pure, unadulterated rage and guilt filled his eyes.
"I'm sorry, baby," Julian wept against her hair, his powerful frame shaking. "I'm so sorry... Daddy's home now. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again."
