Chapter 8 - Shadows over Columbia

Eighteen months after Evelyn and Carter were led away in chains, life at Columbia University seemed to have returned to a smooth, peaceful rhythm. Maya was months away from graduating at the top of her class in Political Science and Law, her days filled with lectures, foundation meetings, and quiet dinners with Julian at the estate.
Yet, a dark undercurrent still rippled beneath the surface.
Evelyn’s younger brother, Richard Thorne—a ruthless hedge-fund liquidator who had spent the last year watching his sister’s fortune evaporate—refused to accept the destruction of his family's prestige. Working in secret with a rogue faction of disgraced former Vance Logistics board members, Richard executed a desperate, predatory move: a hostile takeover bid targeting thirty percent of the Vance shipping shares, utilizing a shadowy offshore syndicate based in Panama.
If Richard succeeded, he would gain enough voting power on the board to audit the Elena Vance Memorial Trust, freeze the foundation's assets, and drag Maya back into a public, bitter legal war.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, as Maya stepped out of the university library, two dark SUVs pulled up along the curb. Richard Thorne stepped out, holding a silver umbrella, a cruel, mocking smirk playing on his thin lips.
"Hello, Maya," Richard said, his voice dripping with false concern. "You look remarkably well for someone whose little empire is about to crumble."
Maya stopped, her grip tightening around her leather book bag. She did not step back. She looked Richard up and down with the absolute composure her father had taught her.
"Richard," Maya said coldly. "You're trespassing on university grounds."
"I'm here to offer you a deal, niece," Richard sneered, stepping closer. "By five o'clock today, my syndicate will acquire thirty-two percent of Vance Logistics stock. We will tie your father up in federal corporate litigation for the next decade. Unless, of course, you convince Julian to dropped the restitution claims against Evelyn and sign over the control of the Memorial Trust."
Maya let out a soft, amused breath. She didn't panic. Instead, she reached into her coat pocket, pulled out her phone, and tapped the screen.
"You're five minutes late, Richard," Maya said calmly.
Before Richard could respond, his phone began ringing wildly in his pocket. He pulled it out, his smirk instantly fading as his lead broker’s panicked voice blared through the speaker:
"Richard! Stop the buy orders! It’s a trap! Vance Logistics didn't issue new shares—they executed a short-squeeze using a dummy subsidiary! Julian and Maya Vance bought up forty-five percent of our syndicate's collateral three hours ago! We're ruined!"

Richard’s face drained of all color. He looked up at Maya in utter disbelief.
"My father and I built that foundation to protect people from predators like your family," Maya said, her amber-flecked eyes sharp as diamonds. "Did you really think I wouldn't notice your offshore wire transfers three weeks ago? My father controls the ships, Richard... but I control the legal trail."
