Chapter 4 - The Betrayal at the Docks

Over the next forty-eight hours, the estate was transformed into a silent war zone.

Lucas and Leo made a breathtaking recovery. Within two days of receiving the antidote and breathing clean air, they were sitting up in bed, eating full meals, and playing with their wooden toy trains. Their laughter echoed down the once-gloomy hallways, breathing life back into a mansion that had been a mausoleum for eighteen months.

I stayed by their side constantly, monitoring their blood work and ensuring no secondary infections took hold. Vincent checked on them every hour, abandoning his usual stern demeanor to sit on the floor and build train tracks with them.

Watching him with his sons, I saw a side of Vincent Moretti that few lived to see—a fiercely loyal, deeply loving man who had been pushed into a life of violence by circumstances and survival, but whose heart belonged entirely to his children.

Late on Thursday night, Marco knocked on the study door.

“Boss,” Marco reported, holding out a encrypted digital tablet. “We tapped Julianna Vance’s private line. She just made a call to a dock master at Pier 42 in New Haven. Matteo has arranged a midnight shipment.”

Vincent picked up the tablet, reading the intercepted text logs. “A shipment of what?”

“Not goods, boss,” Marco said grimly. “A hit squad. Mercenaries hired from an outfit in Boston. He’s bringing in twelve heavily armed men under the cover of a container drop off. He knows he can’t defeat your house guards with his regular crew, so he’s planning a full assault on this estate tomorrow night.”

Vincent’s face hardened into stone. “He wants to wipe out the whole house. Me, the boys, the guards… and Claire.”

“We can call in the loyal captains,” Marco suggested. “Captain Bruno and Captain Rossetti are ready to mobilize fifty men.”

“No,” I chimed in, walking over from the bookshelf where I had been reviewing estate blueprints. “If you fight a war on this property, Lucas and Leo will be caught in the crossfire. Plus, if Matteo realizes an army is waiting for him here, he’ll retreat into hiding and spend the next ten years sending untraceable assassins after your sons.”

Vincent looked at me. “What are you suggesting?”

“Hit him at the docks,” I said calmly. “Intercept the mercenaries before they even unload from the shipping container. Trap Matteo and Julianna at the site, get a recorded confession of their plan, and end this clean.”

Vincent stared at me, a low laugh rumbling in his chest. “You want to execute a night ambush at a shipping dock? You’re a medical specialist and a nanny, Claire.”

“I grew up with three older brothers who were army engineers, Vincent,” I said with a faint smirk. “And I spent five years working in high-risk crisis zones in South America before I took private consulting jobs. I know how tactical operations work.”

Vincent’s smile broadened, his eyes burning with admiration. “God, you are incredible.”

He turned to Marco. “Get the black SUVs ready. Bruno and Rossetti take team alpha to secure the perimeter at Pier 42. Marco, you and I take team beta. We leave at 11:00 PM.”

“I’m coming with you,” I said immediately.

“Absolutely not,” Vincent growled, his protective instincts flaring up instantly. “You stay here with the boys under heavy guard.”

“I need to be there to handle the chemical analysis equipment if they brought secondary toxic agents,” I argued, stepping right up to his chest. “And if anyone gets wounded, you’ll need immediate field medical care. You’re taking me, Moretti, or I’ll drive there myself.”

Vincent glared down at me, frustrated, towering over me, but ultimately defeated by my sheer stubbornness.

“If a single bullet flies near you,” Vincent threatened quietly, grabbing my chin gently between his thumb and forefinger, “I will personally lock you in the estate safe for your own protection. Am I understood?”

“Understood,” I whispered, my heart thumping against my ribs at his touch.

At 11:30 PM, three black, reinforced SUVs pulled out of the estate gates and moved quietly through the fog-shrouded roads toward the New Haven docks.

Pier 42 was a bleak, desolate expanse of rusting shipping containers, looming cranes, and the dark, churning waters of the Long Island Sound. The sea breeze was cold and carried the salty tang of oil and rotting wood.

We parked two blocks away and moved on foot through the shadow of the container stacks. I wore a heavy black tactical jacket over my clothes, carrying a compact medical kit and a thermal scanner. Vincent walked beside me, holding a suppressed assault rifle, his movements completely silent despite his large frame.

Ahead of us, under the harsh yellow halogen lights of a crane gantry, stood two luxury sedans.

Matteo Valenti and Julianna Vance were standing beside a large, blue steel shipping container that had just been lowered from a cargo ship. Four men in dark tactical gear were prying open the heavy container doors with crowbars.

Inside the container, I could see armed mercenaries checking their weapons under dim red lights.

“They’re prepping the assault gear,” Marco whispered beside us, aiming his rifle through a gap between two crates.

“Wait for my signal,” Vincent ordered softly into his radio headset.

Suddenly, Matteo’s voice carried across the quiet pier, amplified by the echo off the metal containers.

“Are they all geared up, Julianna?” Matteo asked impatiently, lighting a cigarette.

“Twelve men, fully equipped with suppressed weapons and thermite charges,” Julianna replied, checking her gold wristwatch. “By 3:00 AM, the Moretti estate will be a burning pile of ash. The police will chalk it up to an unfortunate electrical fire and gas explosion. The bodies will be burned beyond recognition.”

“And Blake?” Matteo asked, taking a drag.

“ Blake is silenced,” Julianna lied smoothly. “Once the fire clears, I present the forged updated trust documents to the probate judge. You become the sole administrator of the Moretti estate and syndicate assets by morning.”

Matteo chuckled, a dark, disgusting sound that echoed across the empty docks. “Poor Vincent. He was so distracted by his dying brats he never saw it coming. My sister would be disappointed, but business is business.”

Standing beside me in the dark, Vincent didn't burst into a rage. Instead, his presence became terrifyingly still—like the eye of a hurricane before it wipes out a city.

He lifted his radio to his lips.

“Alpha team, execute,” Vincent whispered.

High above us on the crane gantry, powerful floodlights suddenly ignited, illuminating the entire pier in blinding white light.

Sirens began to wail as four heavy trucks smashed through the pier gates, blocking all vehicular exit routes. Dozens of Vincent’s loyal men poured out from behind the shipping containers, rifles raised, locking the entire zone in a deadly crossfire.

“DON’T MOVE!” Marco’s voice boomed through a megaphone. “DROP YOUR WEAPONS!”

Chaos erupted instantly.
