Chapter 7 - The Shadows of the Past

Two years later.

The northern shores of Lake Como, Italy, were bathed in the soft, golden light of late spring.

The Villa Moretti stood high on a cliffside overlooking the crystal-clear blue waters, surrounded by ancient olive trees, blooming purple wisteria, and manicured terrace gardens. It was a paradise far removed from the cold, industrial shadows of Connecticut and the dangerous world Vincent had left behind.

I stood on the master balcony, wearing a flowing white silk dress, sipping fresh lemon water. The cool breeze off the lake carried the sweet scent of jasmine and the distant sound of church bells from the village below.

Below on the private dock, a sleek wooden Riva speedboat was moored.

Vincent was standing on the dock, wearing sunglasses and a casual polo shirt, helping nine-year-old Lucas and Leo load fishing rods into the boat. The boys were tall, healthy, and full of life, their skin tanned golden by the Italian sun, their laughter echoing across the water.

“Mom! Hurry up!” Leo shouted toward the balcony, waving his captain’s hat wildly. “Dad says if we get to the deep water before noon, we’ll catch the giant trout!”

“I’m coming, sweetie!” I called back with a laugh, setting my glass down.

As I turned to head inside, I felt a soft, warm kick against my palm. I rested my hand on my rounded stomach. I was six months pregnant with a baby girl—our daughter.

Vincent walked up the terrace steps a moment later, wiping his hands on a towel. When he saw me holding my stomach, his face melted into that soft, beautiful expression that still made my heart melt after two years of marriage.

He walked up to me, wrapping his arms gently around my waist from behind and resting his chin on my shoulder, his large hand sliding over mine against our baby’s kick.

“How is our little princess feeling today?” Vincent whispered, kissing my temple softly.

“She’s as energetic as her brothers,” I smiled, leaning back against his chest. “She’s been practicing her kickboxing all morning.”

Vincent chuckled, a rich, deep sound that radiated comfort. “She’s a Moretti. Strength is in her blood.”

We stood together on the balcony, watching the sunlight dance across the lake. The dark past—the poison, the betrayals, the armed confrontations, the fear—felt like a lifetime ago, a bad dream that had dissolved into the brightness of our present reality.

Mrs. Harper, who had moved to Italy with us as our head household manager, stepped onto the balcony holding a silver tray with fresh fruit and pastries.

“Mr. and Mrs. Moretti,” she said with a bright, genuine smile. “Captain Bruno called from New York. He confirmed that the final transition of the legitimate logistics company into the children’s educational foundation is complete. Everything is clean, quiet, and secure.”

“Thank you, Mrs. Harper,” Vincent said gently. “Tell Bruno to take the rest of the month off.”

“Right away, sir,” she bowed slightly and walked back inside, humming a happy tune.

Vincent turned me around in his arms, looking down at my face with an expression of pure, unadulterated devotion.

“Sometimes,” Vincent whispered, brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear, “I look at this villa, at the boys, at you, and I still can’t believe it’s real. I spent forty years believing that power meant making people fear you. I thought peace was impossible for someone like me.”

“Power isn't about fear, Vincent,” I said, resting my cheek against his chest over his quiet, steady heartbeat. “Power is about having something worth protecting. And peace is what happens when you’re brave enough to let love heal the wounds.”

Vincent smiled, leaning down to press a tender, lingering kiss to my lips, his hand resting lovingly over our unborn daughter.

“Daddy! Mom! The fish aren't going to wait forever!” Lucas screamed from the dock below, blowing a plastic boat whistle impatiently.

Vincent laughed, breaking the kiss and taking my hand in his, linking our fingers firmly together.

“We better get down there,” Vincent smiled, his eyes shining with complete, unbounded happiness. “Her Royal Highness and the Captains are waiting.”

Hand in hand, we walked down the sunlit stone steps together, leaving the shadows behind forever, stepping into a future that was bright, beautiful, and filled with endless love.
