Chapter 5 - Fire on the Water

The boston mercenaries inside the container didn't surrender. They opened fire instantly, spraying automatic rounds across the concrete pier. Sparks flew as bullets ricocheted off metal crates, deafening cracks echoing over the water.

“Get down!” Vincent yelled, grabbing my arm and pulling me behind a heavy steel forklift as bullets tore through the wooden pallets beside us.

Vincent leaned out from behind the cover, firing three precise, suppressed bursts that dropped two mercenary gunmen advancing from the left.

Across the illuminated clearing, Matteo panicked. Dropping his cigarette, he scrambled into his Mercedes sedan while Julianna screamed, diving behind the rear tire of her car as bullets shattered the windshields.

“He’s trying to reach the speedboat at the end of the dock!” Marco yelled over the radio.

Matteo slammed his car into reverse, tires screeching as he smashed through a wooden barrier, tearing down the narrow wooden pier toward a high-powered cigarette boat moored at the far end.

“Claire, stay here!” Vincent ordered, ejecting an empty magazine and slapping a fresh one into his rifle.

“Not a chance!” I shouted, pulling a heavy tactical flashlight and my medical bag as I sprinted right behind him.

We ran down the pier through the fog and muzzle flashes. The gunfire behind us began to subside as Vincent’s overwhelming force neutralized the Boston mercenaries, but ahead of us, Matteo had reached the boat’s deck. The heavy twin V8 engines roared to life, churning the dark ocean water into white foam.

Matteo unholstered a chrome revolver and aimed it directly at Vincent as the boat began to pull away from the wooden dock.

“Die, you bastard!” Matteo screamed, firing three shots.

One bullet splintered the wooden dock at my feet; another clipped Vincent’s tactical vest, spinning him backward.

“Vincent!” I screamed.

Vincent caught his footing on the slippery planks, ignored the impact, raised his rifle with terrifying precision, and put three rounds straight into the boat’s exposed stern fuel tank.

A blinding fireball erupted from the back of the boat with a deafening BOOM!

The explosion blasted Matteo backward across the deck as flames engulfed the vessel’s engines. The boat lost power, drifting aimlessly against the pilings of the adjacent container ship, black smoke billowing into the night sky.

Vincent walked down the burning dock, his face illuminated by the dancing flames, his rifle resting at his side. I followed closely behind, my pulse hammering in my ears.

Matteo crawled out from the burning cabin onto the dock planks, coughing violently, his expensive suit charred, his face covered in soot and blood. He looked up, trembling as Vincent’s heavy boot came down on his chest, pinning him to the wood.

“Vincent… please!” Matteo wheezed, blood dripping from his mouth. “I’m your brother-in-law! Isabella’s blood!”

Vincent leaned down, looking into Matteo’s terrified eyes with absolute, unyielding coldness.

“Isabella loved her family,” Vincent whispered, his voice cutting deeper than any bullet. “You tried to murder her children for green paper. You are no brother to me. You are a cancer.”

Behind us, Marco dragged a sobbing, terrified Julianna Vance down the dock, throwing her onto her knees beside Matteo.

“I have the recordings,” I said, stepping forward and showing Vincent my phone, which had been transmitting the entire conversation to a secure cloud server since the floodlights turned on. “Their full confession, the hit squad orders, and the financial trail. It’s all saved.”

Vincent looked at Julianna, who was weeping uncontrollably, clutching her hands together.

“Julianna,” Vincent said smoothly. “You are a lawyer. You know how the law works. But you also know how my law works.”

“Please, Vincent!” Julianna whimpered. “Matteo forced me! He threatened to kill me if I didn't help him alter the trust documents!”

“Liar!” Matteo spat from under Vincent’s boot. “It was your idea to use Blake! You took fifty percent of the Cayman funds!”

Vincent raised his hand, silencing them both.

“Marco,” Vincent said. “Hand Julianna and the recording over to the federal prosecutor we keep on payroll. She will spend the rest of her natural life in a maximum-security women's prison for attempted murder, conspiracy, and treason.”

Julianna collapsed onto the planks, sobbing in relief that her life was spared, even if her freedom was gone forever.

Then Vincent looked down at Matteo.

“And him, boss?” Marco asked, holding a heavy zip-tie.

Vincent looked out over the dark, burning water of the Long Island Sound.

“Matteo tried to steal my sons’ future in the dark,” Vincent said softly. “He will spend the rest of his days in a subterranean cell in our upstate compound. No light. No visitors. No voice. He will watch my sons grow up on a digital monitor, unable to ever touch the world again.”

Matteo gasped in horror, realizing that living as a ghost in a concrete tomb was a far worse punishment than a quick bullet.

“Take them away,” Vincent ordered.

As Marco and the guards hauled the two conspirators off into the flashing blue lights of incoming loyal syndicate vehicles, the pier fell into a quiet, peaceful stillness. The fire on the boat burned down into glowing embers against the dark water.

Vincent stood at the edge of the dock, his shoulders slightly slumped as the adrenaline began to leave his body. He winced slightly, clutching his side where the bullet had struck his tactical vest.

I stepped up to him instantly, unzipping my medical bag. “Let me see that.”

“It’s just a bruise, Claire,” Vincent said softly, trying to wave me away.

“Unbutton your vest, Moretti,” I said sternly, stepping into his space and unbuckling the heavy kevlar straps myself. “I’m your medical specialist. You don't get to give orders about your own health.”

Vincent chuckled softly, yielding as I pulled the vest back to inspect his ribs. The bullet had flattened against the ceramic plate, leaving a dark, purple bruise across his ribs, but the skin wasn't broken.

My hands rested against his broad, warm chest as I examined him under the faint moonlight. I could feel the steady, powerful thrum of his heartbeat beneath my fingers.

Vincent looked down at me, his icy blue eyes soft, vulnerable, and intensely focused on my lips.

“You didn't run,” Vincent whispered, his hand gently lifting to cup the back of my cheek, his thumb brushing over my skin. “Even when the bullets started flying. Even when you knew who I really was.”

“I told you when I arrived,” I murmured, leaning slightly into his touch, my heart racing. “I notice the things other people ignore. I saw the monster people talk about… but I also saw the man who would burn the world down to keep his children safe. That’s a man worth standing by.”

Vincent leaned down, and his lips met mine in a deep, passionate kiss that seemed to erase the smoke, the violence, and the darkness of the night around us. It was a promise—not of a chaotic life of crime, but of protection, devotion, and a future built on truth.
