Chapter 2 - The Exile's Counterattack

The morning after Christmas Eve felt like the calm after a brutal storm. News within high-society circles traveled faster than light, and by noon on December 25th, whispers of the scene at the Vance estate had already begun to circulate among the elite families of the city.

We stayed at a quiet hotel near the downtown harbor rather than going back to our house right away. Daniel wanted to protect the kids from any potential fallout, knowing Sharon wasn't the type of woman to surrender quietly.

My intuition was proven right at three in the afternoon when my phone buzzed with an incoming call from an unknown number. I answered it, setting it on speaker so Daniel could hear.

"I hope you're enjoying your little victory, Sarah," Sharon’s voice came through the speaker, crisp, sharp, and completely devoid of the panic she had shown the night before. She had clearly spent the night regrouping and plotting.

"What do you want, Sharon?" I asked calmly.

"I'm giving you one chance to fix this," Sharon said, her tone dripping with arrogance. "Lawrence has locked me out of the main accounts, but he's an old, emotional fool. My lawyers are already preparing a response. I will drag this family through every tabloid, every court, and every high-society column in the country. I will claim the DNA test was altered by you to alienate Daniel from his inheritance. By the time I'm finished, your reputation will be in tatters, and Daniel’s career at the firm will be over."

"You really don't get it, do you?" Daniel spoke up, leaning over the phone. "You tried to destroy my marriage and my relationship with my daughter. You used an anonymous letter to manipulate me into doubting my wife. Did you really think I wouldn't trace where that first fake report came from?"

There was a brief pause on the line. "What are you talking about?"

"The anonymous packet sent to my office contained a fake paternity result for Mia," Daniel said, his voice deadly steady. "We had the envelope fingerprinted independently. Do you know whose fingerprints were on the adhesive seal, Sharon? Not yours. Melanie's."

I saw Daniel's hands clench into fists. We had discovered the truth about the source of the fake report just days before Christmas, but finding out that Daniel's sister was in on Sharon's scheme had been the final knife in the back.

"Melanie was just trying to help me save you from yourself!" Sharon snapped, though her voice betrayed a slight tremble.

"Melanie was helping you manipulate the family trust so that her children would get a larger share if I was disinherited," Daniel retorted. "You two planned this together. You fabricated a fake story about Mia to push me out, never realizing that in doing so, you would force me to run a full genetic panel that exposed your own thirty-year-old affair with Thomas Vale."

"You have no proof of an affair!" Sharon hissed.

"We have Thomas Vale's estate records, Sharon," I interjected smoothly. "When Lawrence looked at the second report last night, he didn't just see the name. He remembered that Thomas left a confidential trust fund in a Swiss account that was set to activate upon your death. We spoke to the estate executor this morning. The trust explicitly names Daniel as the primary beneficiary, referencing him as Thomas’s biological son."

The line went completely dead for five seconds.

"You... you went into Thomas’s records?" Sharon whispered, genuine fear creeping back into her voice.

"Lawrence authorized the inquiry this morning," Daniel said. "He’s revoking your access to all family assets, removing you from the board of the Vance Foundation, and filing for divorce on the grounds of fraud and infidelity. If you attempt to leak anything to the press, or if you ever come near Sarah or my children again, we will release the full forensic audit of how you embezzled funds from the family foundation to pay off Thomas Vale's former associate to keep quiet."

Sharon let out a choked breath. "Daniel... I am your mother!"

"A mother protects her children," Daniel replied coldly. "You used mine as weapons. Goodbye, Sharon."

He hung up the phone.

I looked at Daniel, seeing the exhaustion etched deep into the lines around his eyes. He had lost the image of the mother he thought he knew, but in doing so, he had saved our family from a lifetime of toxic control.

"Are you okay?" I asked softly, stepping closer and resting my head against his chest.

Daniel wrapped his arms around me, pulling me tight. "I've never been clearer in my life," he murmured. "For years, I let her make you feel small because I was afraid of breaking up the family. I was a coward, Sarah."

"You weren't a coward," I said, looking up into his eyes. "You believed in family loyalty until she forced you to see her true nature. But now, we rebuild."

Just then, the hotel room door opened, and Lawrence walked in. He looked tired, his posture stooped, but there was a newfound clarity in his expression. In his hands, he carried a small, wrapped package.

"Dad?" Daniel said, standing up.

Lawrence offered a faint, sad smile. "I hope I'm not intruding. I needed to see my grandchildren."

He walked over to where Mia and Noah were sitting at the small dining table, drawing pictures with fresh crayons we had bought them that morning. Lawrence knelt down next to Mia, his eyes brimming with tears.

"Mia, sweetheart," Lawrence said gently, his voice shaking. "I brought something for you."

May you like

Mia looked up cautiously, clutching her crayon. "Is it from Grandma?"

"No," Lawrence said firmly, reaching out to gently touch her soft blonde curls. "It's from your Grandpa. And it's only for you."
