Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Web

The package Lawrence handed to Mia was small, bound in worn velvet. Mia looked at her father for approval, and when Daniel nodded with a soft smile, she carefully unfastened the silver latch. Inside lay a delicate antique locket made of rose gold, carved with intricate floral patterns.
"This belonged to my mother," Lawrence said softly, watching Mia's eyes light up. "She gave it to me before she passed away, telling me to give it to the grandchild who possessed the brightest heart. For years, Sharon kept it locked in her safe, claiming no one was worthy of it yet. But she was wrong. It belongs to you, Mia."
Mia opened the locket. Inside was a tiny photograph of Lawrence as a young boy standing beside his mother, alongside a blank space. "Can I put my picture in here?" she asked, her voice filled with innocent wonder.
"You can put our family picture in there," Lawrence replied, wiping a tear from his cheek. "Because you are the heart of this family, Mia. Never forget that."
While Noah helped Mia put on the locket, Lawrence stood up and motioned for Daniel and me to join him near the balcony window. The winter sky outside was gray, but inside, a quiet warmth was beginning to take root.
"I spoke with the attorneys this morning," Lawrence said in a low voice. "Sharon has retained a aggressive defense team. She isn't going to go down without a fight. She’s claiming that the prenup we signed thirty years ago is invalid because I breached confidentiality by revealing the DNA results to the family."
Daniel frowned. "She's trying to flip the narrative. She wants to claim she’s the victim of a coordinated smear campaign."
"Exactly," Lawrence nodded. "And there’s more. Melanie called me an hour ago. She’s panicked. Sharon threatened to cut her out of her personal will if Melanie doesn't testify in court that Sarah forced Daniel to take the test under duress."
I shook my head in disbelief. "Melanie is willing to perjury herself for Sharon’s money?"
"Melanie has always been dependent on her mother's financial backing," Lawrence sighed heavily. "Her husband’s business failed two years ago, and Sharon has been secretly paying off their debt to keep them under her thumb. Sharon uses money as a leash, Sarah. She always has."
"Then we break the leash," I said firmly. "Lawrence, if Sharon pays off Melanie’s debts, that means there’s a financial trail. If we can prove that Sharon was using foundation funds or martial assets to bribe family members and suppress the truth, her legal claim to the prenuptial agreement completely collapses."
Daniel looked at me, a proud spark in his eyes. "Sarah’s right. My mother thinks she’s the only one who knows how to play chess. But she forgot that I have access to the firm's forensic accounting network."
Over the next three days, our hotel room turned into a tactical command center. While Lawrence took Noah and Mia out to the local winter festival—giving the kids the joyful Christmas experience they had been robbed of—Daniel and I pored over financial records, foundation ledgers, and bank statements dating back a decade.
What we uncovered was far worse than simple spite.
Sharon hadn't just been bitter about my marriage to Daniel; she had been systematically siphoning money from the Vance Family Foundation into shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands. The total amount totaled over four million dollars.
"Look at these dates," Daniel pointed to a line item on a laptop screen. "This transfer of $500,000 was made three weeks ago. Right around the time the anonymous paternity letter was mailed to my office."
"She paid someone to create the fake report," I realized, the pieces finally slotting together. "She didn't just buy a kit online; she paid a crooked lab technician to generate an official-looking document with Mia's name on it, hoping you would use it to divorce me without checking its validity."
"She miscalculated," Daniel said, his jaw tightening. "She thought I would react with blind rage and throw you out. She never expected me to bring the document to you, work together, and conduct a full, legal chain-of-custody test."
"And she certainly didn't expect us to test her DNA against yours," I added.
At that moment, Daniel’s phone rang. It was Melanie.
Daniel set the phone on the desk and hit speaker. "Melanie."
"Daniel... please," Melanie’s voice came through, sobbing hysterically. "You have to stop Dad! He’s freezing my accounts! The bank just canceled my credit cards, and the kids' school tuition is due next week!"
"Dad didn't freeze your accounts, Melanie," Daniel said coldly. "The foundation board froze them because of suspicious transfers linked to your name. Sharon was paying your debts using stolen money from the charity."
Silence descended on the line, followed by a sharp intake of breath. "What?"
"Mom didn't use her own money to keep you afloat, Melanie," I spoke up clearly. "She committed grand larceny using the family foundation, and she dragged you right into the middle of it. If you go to court and lie for her, you aren't just helping her fight a divorce—you're becoming an accessory to federal financial fraud."
"I... I didn't know!" Melanie sobbed, her composure completely shattering. "She told me the money was from her inheritance! She said Sarah was trying to steal Daniel’s trust, and that if we didn't push Sarah out, we’d all be left with nothing!"
"You listened to her lies because you were greedy, Melanie," Daniel said sternly. "But you have one chance to save yourself and your children. You go to Dad's lawyer tomorrow morning. You give a full, truthful statement about how Sharon orchestrated the fake paternity test. If you do that, Dad will cover your debts out of his personal funds and clear your name from the foundation ledger."
May you like
"And if I don't?" Melanie whispered.
"Then you go down with Sharon," Daniel said without hesitation. "Choice is yours."
