Chapter 8 - A Matter of Honor

When autumn returned, bringing crisp red leaves and chilly morning air, Daniel received an unexpected phone call from a high-profile legal firm in Oregon.

It was the estate executor for Thomas Vale.

We sat together in Daniel’s home office as the executor spoke over the conference line.

"Mr. Vance," the executor’s voice was formal yet kind. "Now that the legal matters regarding your mother's separation from the Vance estate have been finalized, I am legally obligated to execute the final provisions of Mr. Thomas Vale's trust."

Daniel looked at me, then back at the phone. "What provisions?"

"When Mr. Vale passed away thirty years ago, he left a sum of two million dollars in a high-yield growth fund," the lawyer explained. "Over the past three decades, that fund has matured significantly. It is currently valued at slightly over eight million dollars."

Daniel took a deep breath. "And what were Thomas’s instructions?"

"The instructions were explicit," the lawyer read directly from the document. "'This fund shall be made available to my biological son, Daniel Vance, upon his reaching full independence, free from any influence or control of Sharon Vance. It is left not as a bribe or an obligation, but as a father's quiet promise to ensure his son always has a safety net, no matter what storms he may face.'"

The room was silent for a long moment. Daniel leaned back in his chair, running a hand through his hair.

"Eight million dollars..." Daniel murmured softly.

"What do you want to do with it, Daniel?" I asked quietly, coming up behind him and resting my hands on his shoulders.

Daniel looked down at a framed photograph on his desk—a picture taken during our beach trip, showing Mia and Noah laughing hysterically as Lawrence chased them into the gentle surf.

"Thomas left this money out of guilt and quiet love," Daniel said, his voice brimming with conviction. "He felt helpless because Sharon kept him away. But I don't need a safety net anymore, Sarah. I have my work, I have my father, and I have you and the kids."

"So what's your idea?" I asked, already sensing the beautiful thought forming in his mind.

"We turn it into something that heals others," Daniel said, turning to look at me with clear, bright eyes. "We create the 'Mia Vance Foundation for Children’s Rights'—an organization dedicated to providing legal representation, DNA verification, and psychological support for children caught in high-conflict custody battles and abusive domestic environments."

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes as I smiled at my husband. "Using the money created by a hidden truth to protect vulnerable children from lies... it’s perfect, Daniel."

"Sharon tried to use Mia's name as a curse," Daniel said softly, pulling me down for a tender kiss. "Now, Mia’s name will be a light for thousands of kids who need someone to stand up for them."
