Chapter 10 - A Father’s Promise

Later that night, after their guests had left and the farmhouse was quiet, Emily walked upstairs to the nursery.

The room was painted a soft, warm peach color, filled with plush stuffed animals, wooden bookshelves, and a hand-carved crib made by Thomas himself.

Clara was fast asleep, her breathing soft and rhythmic, her tiny hand tucked beneath her chin.

Emily stood by the crib, adjusting the light blanket over her daughter’s shoulders.

A quiet step echoed in the hallway, and Colonel Bennett stepped into the room, his shadow long and gentle in the soft nightlight.

He stood beside Emily, looking down at his granddaughter.

"I used to think that being a soldier was the most important work I’d ever do," Thomas whispered, his eyes soft. "Leading men into battle... defending borders... wearing the uniform."

He looked at Emily, placing his warm, strong hand over hers on the crib railing.

"But the proudest day of my life," Thomas continued, "was the day I walked into that apartment, pulled back that blanket, and brought my daughter home."

Emily rested her head against her father’s shoulder, tears of deep, pure happiness rising in her eyes.

"Thank you, Daddy," she whispered. "For everything."

Outside the window, the autumn stars shone bright and clear over the quiet Virginia hills. The house was warm, the doors were locked, and inside, safe beneath the roof built by love and protected by honor, the Bennett family rested at last.
