Chapter 4 - The Rat in the Walls

Thomas stepped out into the private corridor, closing Emily's door completely behind him.
"Speak," Thomas ordered.
"Ryan Vance didn't post bail," Vance reported, tapping the tablet screen. "Because his mother didn't use her own money. A wire transfer for two hundred and fifty thousand dollars came through forty minutes ago from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands."
Thomas’s eyes narrowed. "Who owns the account?"
"A shell corporation called Aegis Holdings," Vance replied. "Which happens to be a subsidiary of Vance Logistics—the defense supply firm run by Ryan’s estranged uncle, Richard Vance."
Thomas felt the pieces of the puzzle begin to click into place with terrifying precision.
Eighteen months ago, when Emily first met Ryan at a charity gala in Chicago, Ryan had presented himself as a humble, mid-level software architect. He had lived in a modest apartment, driven an old sedan, and seemed completely detached from his family's vast wealth.
"It was never about Emily," Thomas realized aloud, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "It was about my security clearance."
"Exactly, sir," Vance said, bringing up a series of financial logs on the screen. "Richard Vance has been under covert investigation by the Defense Intelligence Agency for six months for selling unauthorized drone telemetry data to foreign buyers. He couldn't get near your command network directly. But his nephew marrying the daughter of the Deputy Chief of Strategic Logistics?"
"He used Ryan to put Emily in a cage," Thomas said, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles popped. "They kept her sedated so they could mirror her personal devices... which were linked to my private family network access protocols."
"Ryan walked out of the Cook County jail fifteen minutes ago, sir," Vance added. "Local law enforcement lost visual on his vehicle near the state line."
Thomas looked back through the small glass window of Room 402. Emily was sound asleep, her face finally peaceful under the warm blankets.
"He thinks he’s running," Thomas said softly. "He thinks he can disappear back into his uncle’s network."
"What are your orders, Colonel?"
Thomas turned back to Vance, his posture locking into the iron frame of an army commander preparing for battle.
"Activate the Special Reconnaissance detachment at Fort Meade," Thomas commanded. "Notify the Marshal Service. We aren't just arresting a domestic abuser anymore, Sergeant Major."

"Sir?"
"We are hunting a traitor."
