Chapter 9 - The Final Bond
The sun began to set behind the Blue Ridge Mountains, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber, purple, and deep rose.
Inside the cozy living room of the farmhouse, a fire crackled warmly in the stone fireplace.
Dr. Sarah Lin, who had become a close family friend after supervising Clara's birth, was sitting on the sofa, holding Clara as the baby babbled happily, playing with a silver rattle.
"Her development is flawless, Emily," Dr. Lin reported, smiling as Clara pulled herself up to stand against her knees. "Strong, active, and bright."
"She’s a Bennett," Sergeant Major Vance said from the armchair, adjusting his glasses as he read through the foundation's security clearance logs. "Runs in the blood."
Colonel Bennett walked over to the mantlepiece, where a large, framed photograph had been placed earlier that day.
It was a picture taken on the day of Emily’s college graduation—before she had ever met Ryan, before the lies, before the darkness. In the photo, Emily was smiling brightly, her arms wrapped around her father's neck, who was wearing his dress uniform with pride.
Beside it, Thomas placed a new photograph taken that afternoon.
In the new photo, Emily stood proudly on the porch of the new cottage, holding baby Clara, flanked by Colonel Bennett and Sergeant Major Vance, surrounded by golden autumn leaves and bright sunshine.
