Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

Within an hour, the estate had been transformed into a fortress.
Four extra security SUVs blocked the iron gates at the entrance of the property. Armed men walked the perimeter of the gardens, their heavy coats hiding automatic weapons. Upstairs, Dr. Mercer had finished examining Isabella, confirming that while she had sustained deep bruising along her wrist and shoulder, her vitals were stable and her ribs were unbroken.
In the second-floor master suite, Isabella lay tucked beneath a thick velvet quilt. Naomi sat in a chair beside the bed, gently applying a cold compress to the old woman’s swollen wrist.
Isabella was awake. Her eyes were bright, following Naomi’s every movement. Slowly, her left hand lifted, her fingers tapping against Naomi’s arm—two quick taps, then one long press.
"You're safe now, Mrs. Moretti," Naomi said softly, smiling down at her. "Luca is downstairs. Nobody is going to hurt you again."
Isabella shook her head slightly. She reached over to the nightstand, pointing her finger toward a small leather-bound photo album resting beside her reading glasses.
Naomi picked up the album and opened it to where a silk ribbon marked a page. It showed a photograph from thirty years ago: a young Isabella standing beside her late husband, Antonio Moretti, at a grand gala. But it wasn't the young couple Isabella was pointing at; it was the man standing in the background, wearing a tailored tuxedo and holding a glass of scotch.
The man had a thin mustache, sharp, hawk-like eyes, and a distinct scar running down his right jawline.
"Who is this?" Naomi asked.
Isabella tapped the photo twice, her breath catching in her throat as she tried to form a word. "V... V..."
"Vance?" Naomi guessed.
Isabella shook her head furiously. She pointed to the scar, then tapped three times on the mattress. Low, low, low.
Before Naomi could ask more, the bedroom door clicked open. Luca stepped inside, carrying two fresh cups of dark espresso. He had changed out of his ruined silk shirt into a dark wool sweater, but his face remained tight with strain.
He set a cup on the table near Naomi. "Dr. Mercer checked your shoulder on his way out. He said you have a deep contusion, but nothing is dislocated. You should be resting."
"I’d rather stay here," Naomi said, rising slightly before Luca placed a firm hand on her good shoulder, pushing her gently back into the chair.
"Sit," he commanded softly. "That wasn't a request."
He turned to his mother, bending down to kiss her forehead. Isabella immediately grabbed his wool sleeve with her left hand, pulling him closer until his ear was near her lips.
"C... C... Cole..." Isabella rasped, her voice barely a whisper, but clear enough to make Luca freeze. "Safe... safe..."
Luca pulled back, his eyes narrowing. "The study safe?"
Isabella nodded once, her chest rising and falling heavily with the effort.
Luca stood up, turning to Naomi. "Stay with her. I have Marco at the door, but do not open it for anyone except him or me. Do you understand?"
"I understand," Naomi said.
Luca hurried down the grand staircase toward his private study on the ground floor. The room was lined with floor-to-ceiling books, dark leather armchairs, and a heavy mahogany desk that had belonged to his father. Behind a painting of the Venetian lagoon on the north wall sat the heavy steel door of the family safe—a vault that held not just cash and bearer bonds, but decades of intelligence on every political figure, judge, and rival boss in the Tri-State area.
When Luca pulled the painting aside, his blood ran cold.
The keypad display on the digital lock was dark, but the steel handle was turned forty-five degrees. The safe was unlocked.
He swung the heavy door open. Inside, two shelf compartments were entirely empty. The black leather binders containing the original deeds to the Moretti shipping terminals, along with the encrypted hard drives detailing the offshore accounts holding fifty million dollars in family capital, were gone.
Luca stepped back, his chest heaving as the full scope of the plot clicked into place like the tumbler of a lock.
Vivien hadn't just tried to get Isabella declared mentally incompetent to take over her private estate trust. That was merely the distraction. While Vivien was in the music room creating a scene, her accomplice had entered the study, used an insider bypass code, and cleared out the lifeblood of the Moretti enterprise.
Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, dialing Marco immediately.
"Marco," Luca said, his voice dropping into a lethal register. "Where is Vivien?"
"She’s in the downstairs study, boss, just like you ordered. Sam is standing right outside the door."
"Open the door, Marco," Luca said. "Open it now."
A five-second silence stretched across the line, followed by the muffled sound of a handle turning, a door swinging open, and then Marco’s sudden, sharp curse.
"Luca... she’s gone. The ground-floor window is unlocked. The iron screen was unbolted from the inside."
Luca closed his eyes, his knuckles turning white around his phone. "She didn't run alone. Call the gate house. Find out who left the property in the last thirty minutes."
"I don't need to call the gate house," Marco replied, his voice shaking with rare, genuine fear. "The secondary security team... the men hired by Cole's logistics firm last month... they just disarmed the guards at the east barrier and drove three vans out."
Luca stood alone in his study, looking at the empty safe. The trap had been set months ago, built on his own blindness, his willingness to entertain a political marriage to solidify his power. They hadn't just attacked his mother; they had taken his empire out from under him while he was playing the dutiful son.

He turned toward the doorway, his eyes burning with a dark, terrifying flame.
"Gather the men," Luca whispered into the phone. "All of them. Tonight, Chicago burns."
