Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

The red glow of the emergency lights reflected off the pools of rainwater seepage on the concrete floor.
Dominic Vance lay still against the base of the steel vault door. Beside the folding table, Arthur Cole was sobbing hysterically, his hands bound behind his back with heavy plastic zip-ties provided by Marco. Vivien sat against the far wall, a makeshift bandage pressed against her shattered nose, her expensive coat torn, her face pale as death as she stared at the floor.
Luca stood in the center of the room, his weapon lowered, his breath coming in long, slow exhalations.
Naomi stepped out from behind the steel storage locker, carrying the two black leather binders tightly in her arms. She walked across the room, her boots clicking against the concrete, and stopped beside Luca.
He turned his head to look at her. His wool sweater was torn at the sleeve, his face smudged with gunsmoke and dirt, but when his eyes met hers, the cold, murderous fury that had possessed him all night slowly receded.
"Are you hurt?" he asked, his voice rough.
"I'm fine," Naomi said gently. She handed him the binders. "Everything is here. The shipping deeds, the ledgers, the accounts."
Luca took the binders, looking down at them, then handed them to Marco. He turned his gaze to Arthur Cole and Vivien.
"What do we do with them, boss?" Marco asked, pointing his weapon at Arthur. "The river is two blocks away. We can have them under the ice in twenty minutes."
Arthur gasped, dropping his head to the concrete floor. "Please! Luca, please! I’ll sign over my entire firm! I’ll give you my personal assets! Don't kill me!"
Vivien looked up, tears streaming down her bruised face, her voice a pathetic whisper. "Luca... please... I loved you... I did it because my father forced me..."
Luca looked at the woman he had almost married. Six hours ago, she had stood in his estate in an immaculate cream dress, looking down on his paralyzed mother with disdain, striking a helpless woman to steal an empire. Now, stripped of her money, her family’s protection, and her vanity, she was nothing more than a desperate criminal sitting in a ruined basement.
"Death is too quick for you, Vivien," Luca said coldly. "And I don't give my enemies an easy way out."
He turned to Marco. "Call Federal Prosecutor Harrison. Tell him I have the entire paper trail detailing thirty years of international racketeering, tax evasion, and corporate fraud committed by Sterling & Associates and the Vance estate."
Arthur Cole lifted his head, his eyes wide with shock. "Federal prosecutor?! Luca, if you give them those records, my family will be ruined! I’ll spend the rest of my life in a maximum-security prison!"
"That," Luca said, stepping closer and looking down into Cole’s terrified face, "is the point. You will sit in a five-by-eight cell, Arthur. You will watch your assets being seized by the state, your reputation erased, and your daughter serving fifteen years for conspiracy to commit murder and elder abuse. Every single day you wake up on a steel cot, you will remember my mother's face."
Luca turned his back on them, taking Naomi by the arm. "Marco, lock them in the upper office until the federal marshals arrive. Make sure they don't die before they sign the confession."
"Understood, Luca," Marco said, a grim smile spreading across his face.
As they walked out of the vault into the cold, damp corridor, the heavy steel grates were lifted by Marco’s men. They climbed the metal staircase, stepping out of the decaying cold-storage building into the early morning light.
The rain had finally stopped. Over the dark, choppy waters of Lake Michigan, a pale line of gold was breaking through the gray clouds, signaling the arrival of dawn.
Luca stopped near the sedan, pulling his coat around his shoulders. He looked down at Naomi, who was standing beside him, her hair damp from the rain, her face pale with fatigue, but her posture still steady and resolute.

"It’s over," she whispered, looking up at the sky.
"The war is over," Luca agreed softly. He reached out, his hand gently lifting her chin so she was forced to look at him. "But everything else changes today."
