Chapter 2 - THE WAR OF RETALIATION

The notification arrived at 4:00 PM on Tuesday. Ethan’s attorney, a notorious high-conflict litigator named Marcus Vance, had filed an emergency motion for temporary custody of the children and immediate exclusive possession of the marital home, alleging that Caroline was mentally unstable and creating a hostile environment for the children.
"Standard intimidation tactic," Rebecca explained over a secure call that evening. "They know they don't have the legal leverage on the property, so Vance is trying to swing the narrative by weaponizing the children. They want to panic you into a quick, out-of-court settlement where you surrender your equity in exchange for shared custody."
"They won't get a single square foot," Caroline said, her voice steady.
The following morning, Caroline arrived at the county courthouse for the initial emergency hearing. The marble halls were freezing, humming with the murmur of strained families and hushed legal conferences. Standing near the courtroom doors were Ethan and Brooke. Brooke was dressed in a conservative beige suit, acting every bit the supportive partner, holding Ethan’s hand as if they were the victims of an unexpected tragedy.
When Brooke saw Caroline, she adjusted her posture and took a step forward, putting on a tragic, sympathetic expression.
"Caroline, please," Brooke murmured as Caroline walked past. "This court battle is going to ruin the kids. Ethan just wants what's fair so we can build a safe environment for Mason and the girls when they stay with us. Why are you dragging this out?"
Caroline stopped. She looked down at Brooke’s flawless appearance, then looked Ethan dead in the eye.
"What's fair?" Caroline asked softly, ensuring her tone remained entirely devoid of emotion. "You mean using fifty thousand dollars from our children's college fund to pay off your second husband's loan sharks, Brooke? Or Ethan transferring studio capital into a private account to pay for your weekend trips to Savannah while I was taking care of Nora in the hospital?"
Ethan’s face turned gray. Brooke’s sympathetic posture instantly shattered, her eyes widening in panic. "What are you talking about? That's ridiculous—"
"Save it for the judge," Rebecca said, stepping between them and opening the heavy wooden doors to the courtroom.
Inside, the judge, a formidable woman named Justice Evelyn Harper, presided over the bench. Marcus Vance immediately took the floor, painting Ethan as a devoted father who was unfairly locked out of his own home by a vengeful ex-wife using emotional instability to isolate the children.
"Your Honor," Vance boomed, gesturing dramatically toward Ethan. "My client merely sought an amicable separation. Instead, his wife staged an aggressive lockout, keeping him from his three young children and denying him access to his personal residence!"
Justice Harper turned her gaze to Rebecca. "Ms. Sloan, your response?"
Rebecca stood up with measured grace. "Your Honor, we have submitted sworn affidavits along with photographic evidence from the night of August 21st. Mr. Mercer did not leave due to a lockout; he voluntarily abandoned the home after announcing his extra-marital relationship with the petitioner’s stepsister during a family dinner, in front of all three minor children aged nine and six."
A soft murmur rippled through the gallery. Justice Harper raised an eyebrow, reviewing the documents on her desk.
"Furthermore," Rebecca continued, "we have filed an emergency freeze on all liquid assets due to verified evidence of unauthorized financial transfers totaling over $150,000 from the marital business account to secondary entities controlled by Mr. Mercer and his partner, Ms. Brooke Vance."
"That is an unproven allegation!" Vance interjected, his face turning red.
"We have the bank statements stamped by forensic auditors right here, Your Honor," Rebecca countered smoothly, handing a thick folder to the bailiff.
Justice Harper reviewed the bank statements for three long, agonizing minutes. The silence in the room was deafening. Ethan fidgeted nervously with his watch, while Brooke looked wildly around the room, realization dawning on her that their legal ambush had backfired disastrously.
Justice Harper slammed her gavel down.
"Emergency motion for possession of the home is denied," the judge ruled firmly. "The property title is sole-and-separate inheritance held by Mrs. Mercer. Mr. Mercer is granted supervised visitation with the three children twice a week at a designated family center, pending a full psychological evaluation of both parents and a forensic audit of all accounts. An immediate freeze is placed on all marital assets."
"Supervised?" Ethan blurted out, standing up. "Your Honor, I am their father!"
"And you showed extraordinarily poor judgment by staging a confrontation in front of them, sir," Justice Harper snapped. "Sit down before I cite you for contempt. Court is adjourned."

Outside the courtroom, Brooke grabbed Ethan’s arm, her voice rising in pitch. "Ethan! You said her attorney was just a small-town family lawyer! What is happening?"
Caroline walked past them without slowing her pace. As she reached the glass doors leading out into the morning sunlight, she looked back one last time. Ethan was slumped against the wall, staring at his phone as alert notifications from his frozen bank accounts began flooding in.
