Chapter 5 - THE BREAKING POINT

The deposition took place in the main conference room of the county courthouse. The room was sterile, lit by harsh fluorescent lights, with a court reporter sitting quietly at the end of the long mahogany table.
Ethan sat on one side, looking visibly exhausted, dark circles bruised beneath his eyes. Brooke sat beside him, wearing an oversized designer sunglasses frame pushed up on her head, attempting to project air of calm confidence. Marcus Vance sat between them, his legal pad ready.
Caroline sat across from them, flank by Rebecca and a certified forensic accountant named Arthur Pendelton.
"We are here today," Vance began in his booming courtroom voice, "to reach an equitable compromise regarding the division of business equity and the distribution of marital assets, as well as establishing a permanent custody calendar for Mr. Mercer."
"Before we discuss custody or business equity," Rebecca interrupted calmly, opening a thick navy blue binder, "we would like to enter several sworn exhibits into the official record."
Rebecca handed copies across the table to Vance. Ethan frowned, leaning over to look at the paperwork. Brooke glanced down, and her face instantly drained of color.
"Exhibit A," Rebecca stated clearly, her voice echoing in the small room, "is a certified financial trace showing twelve transfers from the Flora & Grace account into an off-shore entity owned by Ms. Brooke Vance, totaling $158,000."
"Those were legitimate consulting fees!" Brooke interjected, her voice sharp and panicky. "Ethan authorized them!"
"Ethan was not authorized to transfer funds to an unregistered entity without his business partner's written consent," Rebecca replied smoothly. "Which brings us to Exhibit B: certified records from the Superior Court of Fulton County, Georgia, detailing Ms. Vance's civil judgment for financial fraud and corporate extortion."
Ethan froze. He slowly turned his head to look at Brooke. "What?"
"This is irrelevant nonsense!" Vance shouted, though his confidence clearly faltered as he scanned the legal judgments.
"It is entirely relevant to Mr. Mercer's fitness as a financial custodian for his children," Rebecca countered effortlessly. "Exhibit C: private text messages retrieved via court subpoena from Ms. Vance’s personal phone, dated six months ago. Allow me to read a text sent by Ms. Vance to a third party on March 14th."
Rebecca adjusted her glasses and read aloud: “Ethan is spineless, but he has access to his wife's real estate and studio cash. Once we push Caroline to sell the house to avoid a scene, I’ll take my half of the settlement and cut him loose.”
The room went dead silent. The only sound was the steady click of the court reporter's keyboard.
Ethan stared at the printed text message, his mouth slightly open. He looked at Brooke, his eyes filled with horror and disbelief. "Brooke... what is this?"
Brooke’s polished posture completely shattered. She glared at Caroline with pure venom, dropping all pretenses of soft-spoken innocence.
"You think you're so smart, don't you?" Brooke hissed across the table, her hands clenching into fists. "You sat there playing the perfect mother, the perfect wife, with your stupid inherited house and your perfect little business! You had everything handed to you by your mother while I had nothing!"
"Brooke, shut up!" Vance warned, grabbing her arm.
"No!" Brooke yelled, turning her fury on Ethan. "And you! You idiot! You couldn't even stand up to your own wife! You let her lock you out of everything! You're completely useless!"
Ethan shrank back in his chair, looking utterly crushed. The grand romance he had destroyed his family for was nothing more than an ugly, calculated scam, and he had walked straight into it.

Caroline slowly leaned forward, placing her hands flat on the table, her eyes calm and unwavering as she looked at her stepsister.
"The deposition is over," Caroline said softly. "I'll see you both in trial."
