Chapter 4 - UNMASKING THE PARASITE

The forensic audit ordered by Justice Harper bore fruit faster than expected. Two weeks into the court-mandated investigation, Rebecca called Caroline into her office for an urgent update.

"We uncovered something far worse than simple dissipation of marital funds," Rebecca said, sliding a thick legal folder across her desk. "Your stepsister Brooke didn't just end up in debt from her previous divorce. She has an established pattern of civil litigation spanning three different states."

Caroline opened the file. Page after page contained court records, financial liens, and affidavits.

"Eight years ago," Rebecca detailed, pointing to a document, "Brooke was named as a co-respondent in a fraud case in Georgia. She targeted a wealthy married couple, entered their family business as a marketing consultant, engaged in an affair with the husband, and successfully pushed for a settlement that netted her over two hundred thousand dollars before moving here."

Caroline stared at the records in shock. "She’s a serial predator."

"Precisely," Rebecca confirmed. "And her second marriage wasn't ended by her ex-husband throwing her things out, as she told you. She was sued by her second husband’s family for attempt to forge a quitclaim deed on his mother’s property. She moves from family to family, targeting unstable marriages or creating fractures, then leverages emotional chaos for financial payouts."

"Ethan didn't just fall in love," Caroline realized, a cold shiver running down her spine. "He was targeted."

"He was an easy mark," Rebecca agreed. "He had access to your studio's capital and your inherited real estate. Brooke believed that if Ethan declared a sudden divorce in front of the children, your guilt and desire to shield the kids would drive you to sell the house quickly and divide the cash fifty-fifty. She planned to take her share of that settlement and abandon Ethan the moment the funds cleared."

Caroline squeezed her eyes shut, digesting the horrifying scope of the deception. The woman she had welcomed into her home as family, who had hugged her children and cried on her shoulder, had calculated every move from the very beginning.

"Does Ethan know?" Caroline asked.

"Not yet," Rebecca smiled thinly. "We are keeping this evidence locked until our deposition with Ethan and Brooke next Tuesday. When we present this in front of the judge and his own attorney, his legal strategy will completely collapse."

That night, Caroline sat in her mother’s old rocking chair in the den. The house felt quiet, but no longer heavy. For the first time in months, the air felt clean. She looked at a photograph of her mother sitting in the very same garden outside.

"I won't let her take what you built, Mom," Caroline whispered into the quiet room. "Not a single leaf."
