Chapter 1 - The First Strike

"And Henderson?" Arthur Sterling’s voice did not rise, but it carried the chilling weight of a guillotine blade dropping in an empty room.
Henderson stepped forward, his head bowed slightly in absolute attention. "Yes, Mr. Sterling?"
"Call the treasury desk," my father said, turning the blood-stained hickory cane in his gloved hands. "I want every credit line held by the Hayes Group frozen by dawn. Notify the Board of Directors at Manhattan General that we are withdrawing the Sterling Endowment—effective immediately. And inform the District Attorney that Arthur Sterling is coming down to his office personally. If he is asleep, wake him."
"Consider it done, sir," Henderson replied, his tactical team already moving with cold, methodical speed.
I was rolled into the private elevator, the high-pressure oxygen mask pressing against my face. My body was a tapestry of agony—broken ribs, deep lacerations across my spine, and a jaw that throbbed with every pulse of my heart. But beneath the physical pain, a far more terrifying reality was taking hold: I had spent two years married to Julian Hayes, believing he was merely distant, ambitious, and stressed by his family's declining empire.
I never knew he was a monster.
I never knew that behind the closed doors of our penthouse, as his family’s hedge fund crumbled, his frustration would turn into physical violence. And tonight, when I caught him transferring fifteen million dollars from my personal trust account into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands, the mask had completely shattered.
"Hold on, Clare," my father whispered beside the gurney inside the armored ambulance, holding my uninjured hand so tightly his knuckles turned gray. "You don't have to be brave anymore. I have the watch now."
At Manhattan General's private VIP wing—a facility my family had funded for three generations—a team of top trauma surgeons was waiting. I was whisked into an emergency suite where digital scans revealed three cracked ribs, severe internal bruising, and lacerations that required thirty-two stitches across my back.
While the medical staff stabilized me, the war outside had already begun.
By 4:00 AM, Arthur Sterling sat in the corner of my private room, a glass of untouched whiskey sitting on the table beside him. Beside him stood his chief legal counsel, Evelyn Cross—a woman known in the financial world as the "Iron Prosecutor."
"Julian Hayes has gone into hiding," Evelyn reported in a low, sharp tone, pulling up digital court filings on her tablet. "His mother, Eleanor Hayes, tried to file a preemptive protective order claiming Clare had an episode of severe psychological distress and destroyed the penthouse herself."
My father let out a soft, dark laugh that made the air in the room freeze. "Eleanor thinks her family’s old-money social standing will save them. She forgets who built the bank that holds her mortgage."
"We’ve already executed the asset freeze," Evelyn continued. "The Hayes Group's stock dropped twenty-two percent in pre-market trading the moment news leaked that Sterling Capital withdrew its credit guarantee. But there’s a complication, Arthur."
My father turned his stone-cold gaze toward her. "Speak."
"Julian didn't just steal Clare’s trust money," Evelyn said, leaning in closer. "He used her forged signature to pledge Sterling Capital shares as collateral for a forty-million-dollar loan from a syndicate linked to Russian private equity. If that loan defaults—which it will, now that we froze his accounts—those shares could be seized."

My father stood up slowly, stepping to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the quiet, dark expanse of Central Park.
"They didn't just hit my daughter," Arthur whispered softly. "They tried to dismantle my legacy using her blood. Tell Henderson to activate the secondary protocol. We aren't just suing the Hayes family, Evelyn. We are erasing them."
