Chapter 4 - The Voice of the Monster

Static hissed over the satellite line before Julian’s voice came through. It was no longer the polished, suave tone of a Manhattan socialite; it was frantic, breathless, and edged with manic desperation.
"Clare..." Julian stammered, his background filled with the faint sound of ocean waves and wind. "Clare, listen to me! You have to listen to me before your father ruins everything!"
"I'm listening, Julian," I said calmly, leaning against my father’s mahogany desk while Henderson began tracing the signal origin.
"Your father has lost his mind!" Julian yelled into the receiver. "He froze my mother’s accounts! He put federal marshals outside our offices! He’s trying to destroy fifty years of my family’s legacy!"
"You beat me with a heavy hickory cane, Julian," I reminded him, my tone utterly flat. "You broke three of my ribs. You left me bleeding on the floor after stealing my trust fund."
"It was a mistake!" he cried out, trying to sound remorseful, but the entitlement in his voice was sickeningly obvious. "I was under immense pressure! The Russian investors... they threatened to kill me if I didn't secure the forty million! I panicked! You know I love you, Clare! You know I would never hurt you if I wasn't desperate!"
My father’s hand clenched into an absolute fist, but he remained silent, honoring my lead.
"If you loved me, Julian, you wouldn't be hiding on an island like a coward," I replied. "What do you want?"
"I need you to authorize the biometric key," Julian pleaded, dropping all pretense. "Just log into the secure portal and upload your facial scan. That’s all! Once the forty million clears, I can pay off the Russians, give you back your share, and we can settle the divorce quietly! I’ll sign whatever papers your father wants! I’ll leave the country forever!"
"And if I refuse?" I asked.
A sharp, dark edge returned to Julian’s voice. "If you refuse, Clare, those Russian investors aren't going to come after me. They know where your father’s estate is in Greenwich. They know where you sleep. They’ll burn your father's world to the ground to get their collateral."
It was a bluff born of absolute panic.
"I won't do it over the phone, Julian," I said smoothly, laying the trap. "I know how digital security works. If I upload my facial scan remotely while my father’s security team is monitoring my network, they’ll trace the transaction and intercept the funds before they reach your account."
Silence hung on the line. "Then how?" Julian demanded nervously.
"I’ll meet you," I said. "On neutral ground. The private airstrip in St. Thomas. I bring the physical hardware key, you sign the full confession and divorce release, I authorize the transfer, and we part ways forever."
"Clare, no!" Julian hesitated, his paranoia kicking in. "Your father will have federal agents surrounding the airstrip!"
"My father doesn't know I'm making this call," I lied flawlessly. "I'm using a burn phone from my bedroom. I want this nightmare over just as much as you do, Julian. Do we have a deal, or do I let my father’s lawyers destroy you?"
A long pause stretched over the satellite connection.
"Tomorrow night," Julian finally snapped. "Midnight at the St. Thomas private hanger. Come alone, or the deal is off."
The line went dead.

Henderson looked up from his trace monitor, a tactical map already displaying the Caribbean coordinates. "Got him. St. Thomas private airfield, Hangar 4."
My father looked at me, his eyes filled with fiercely guarded love. "We depart on the private jet in two hours."
