Chapter 9 - The Sovereign Legacy

Later that evening, as the music played through the grand halls of the museum, I stepped out onto the quiet stone balcony overlooking the park.

The night air was crisp and sweet, carrying the scent of spring flowers. The Manhattan skyline glowed like a constellation of diamond lights against the dark velvet sky.

I leaned against the stone railing, looking out over the city.

Two years ago, I thought my life was defined by the walls of a penthouse, by the fears of a woman trying to please a cruel husband, and by the illusion that security came from staying quiet.

Now, I knew the truth.

Security came from standing tall in your own power. It came from knowing that no matter how hard the world hit you, you had the strength to stand back up, reclaim your story, and protect those who could not protect themselves.

Footsteps sounded quietly behind me.

My father stepped out onto the balcony, holding two small glasses of sparkling cider. He handed one to me and leaned beside me against the balustrade.

"What are you looking at, sweet girl?" he asked softly.

"I'm looking at my city, Dad," I answered, a genuine, radiant smile touching my lips. "And for the first time in my life... I'm not afraid of anything in it."

Arthur clinked his glass gently against mine. "Nor should you be. The Sterlings don't break, Clare. We endure."

May you like

"We endure," I echoed.

We drank together under the stars, watching the lights of New York shimmer brightly below us.
