Chapter 1 - The Ink on the Paper

The silence that followed Luka Moretti capped his pen was deafening. The nurse stared down at the crisp white document in shock, her fingers trembling slightly as she looked from the tattooed man in black to the exhausted, pale woman holding her newborn child.

"Sir... you can't just sign a government birth certificate," the nurse stuttered, her voice shaking. "Are you the legal husband?"

Luka didn't look at the nurse. His dark brown eyes remained locked on mine, intense and unyielding. "I am the man who is taking legal responsibility for this child and her mother today. Place that document in the official file and notify hospital administration that Mrs. Elena Vance is under private security protocol."

My brain was spinning out of control. I clutched my tiny daughter tighter against my chest, her soft breaths warm against my collarbone. "Luka... I don't know who you are. Why did you just do that? My husband—"

"Julian is no longer your husband in any way that matters, Elena," Luka interrupted softly, his voice a deep, gravelly baritone that somehow grounded the chaotic panic in my chest. "He walked out that door with Sabrina Vance—his cousin’s widow—and three million dollars stolen from your late father’s estate."

My breath caught in my throat. My father, Arthur Vance, had passed away six months ago in a sudden, tragic car accident. He was a senior biochemical engineer at Vance Bio-Tech, a massive pharmaceutical firm. I had spent the last six months grieving while heavily pregnant, trusting Julian to handle the legal wrapping up of my father's affairs.

"How do you know about my father?" I whispered, my voice cracking.

Luka reached into his dark jacket and pulled out a worn, black leather folder. Printed on the side in faded red ink was a single classification code: M-17.

"Your father didn't die in an accident, Elena," Luka said, stepping closer so his tall frame shielded me from the hospital hallway. "He was murdered because he discovered that Julian and his corporate backers were using Vance Bio-Tech to test unregistered cellular treatments. And your baby girl... isn't just Julian's daughter. She carries the only biological cure your father created before they silenced him."

Before I could process his words, two men in sharp grey suits sprinted around the corner of the corridor, their eyes locked on me.

Luka didn't panic. He smoothly stepped in front of me, his hand slipping inside his coat. The two men froze instantly, recognizing the lethal authority in Luka's calm posture, before turning around and retreating into the elevator banks.

"We have to leave now," Luka said gently, turning back to me. He reached out with one heavily tattooed hand—his knuckles bearing small, faded scars—and gently tucked the pink blanket around my baby's sleeping face. "Trust me, Elena. Just for tonight."
