Chapter 10 - The True Father

Two years later.

The morning sun washed over a vibrant, blooming garden behind the coastal estate in Maine. The air was rich with the scent of wild sea salt and pine.

A little two-year-old girl with bright, dark brown eyes and light brown curls was running barefoot across the soft green grass, laughing hysterically as she chased a golden retriever puppy.

"Daddy! Look! I caught him!" Maya squealed happily, turning back toward the patio.

Luka was sitting on the wooden deck, wearing a simple white linen shirt with his sleeves rolled up, revealing the dark, intricate tattoos covering his arms. He threw his head back with a warm, booming laugh—a sound that filled every corner of our home with pure joy.

"Good job, little tiger!" Luka called out, getting down on his hands and knees on the grass as Maya came running over, launching her tiny body directly into his broad chest.

Luka caught her effortlessly, swinging her high into the air as she giggled wildly, before settling her safely onto his shoulders.

I walked out onto the porch carrying a tray of fresh iced tea, wearing a simple sundress, my heart overflowing with a peace I had once believed was impossible.

Vance Bio-Tech had been fully restructured into a non-profit medical research foundation bearing my father's name, providing free cellular therapies to children around the world. Julian Vance and Sabrina were currently serving twenty-five-year sentences in federal prison with zero possibility of parole.

Luka walked over to me, holding Maya safely on his shoulders, and wrapped his free arm around my waist, pulling me close against his side.

"What are you thinking about, Mrs. Moretti?" Luka whispered softly, leaning down to press a sweet kiss against my temple.

"I was thinking about that day at the hospital," I smiled, reaching up to gently trace the tattooed line along his jaw. "About the tattooed stranger who walked out of the shadows with a black pen and saved my life."

Luka looked down at me, his dark eyes shining with deep, everlasting devotion.

"I didn't save you, Elena," Luka said softly, pressing his forehead against mine while our daughter babbled happily above us. "You and Maya gave a soldier a home. And as long as I draw breath, no shadow will ever touch this family again."

Outside, the calm blue ocean waves broke gently against the shore under the bright, golden sun—a silent witness to a love that had built an unbreakable fortress out of the ashes of betrayal.
