Chapter 2 - The Fortress in the Hills

An hour later, a heavy black armored SUV pulled through a towering iron gate nestled deep within the forested hills outside the city. The estate was massive, surrounded by high stone walls, security cameras, and discreetly armed guards patrolling the perimeter.

I sat in the plush leather backseat, holding my newborn—whom I had named Maya—while Luka sat in the front passenger seat, silently monitoring three tablet screens displaying real-time traffic and security feeds.

"This is my home," Luka said as the vehicle came to a smooth stop beneath a stone portico. "Julian thinks you are currently homeless, broken, and stranded at the municipal hospital. He believes he has forty-eight hours to claim your father’s final bank accounts before anyone realizes you’ve vanished."

"Why are you helping me, Luka?" I asked as the driver opened my door. "You don't know me. You signed your name on my daughter's birth certificate... you tied yourself to us."

Luka stepped down, offering me his hand to help me out of the vehicle. His grip was large, warm, and remarkably gentle.

"Ten years ago, I was a twenty-year-old soldier lying in a field hospital overseas with a shattered spine," Luka said, looking down into my eyes with an unwavering intensity. "The military doctors said I would never walk again. Your father, Arthur Vance, was the civilian researcher who spent three months redesigning an experimental nerve-regeneration compound specifically for my case. He didn't just save my life, Elena—he gave me my legs back. I swore to him then that if he ever needed anything, I would be his shield."

Tears welling in my eyes swept away the lingering coldness from Julian's betrayal. For nine months, Julian had made me feel like an anchor dragging him down, an inconvenience in his grand corporate climbing. But standing beside this intimidating, tattooed man, I realized I had been living with a viper while my true protector had been watching from the shadows.

Luka led me inside to a warm, sunlit nursery on the second floor, fully stocked with fresh cribs, organic infant supplies, and clothes in every size. A warm, kindly elderly woman named Mrs. Gable introduced herself as the house nurse, immediately taking Maya to feed and bathe her while I showered.

When I stepped out in a soft wool sweater and jeans, Luka was waiting in the private library downstairs. Spread across the large mahogany desk were dozens of financial printouts, bank wire receipts, and a copy of my late father’s true, unedited will.

"Julian made a massive mistake today," Luka said, a dark, dangerous smile touching his lips.
