Chapter 3 - The Midnight Strategy

By 1:00 AM, the grand mansion in Greenwich was completely locked down. FBI technicians in dark uniforms moved through the private offices, cloning hard drives, cataloging financial ledgers, and securing the evidence vials.

In the central library, Adrian sat at his long oak desk. He had showered, shaved off his ragged beard, and dressed in a tailored charcoal suit that had hung untouched in his closet for nearly a decade.

Mara Reyes sat across from him, sipping a cup of strong black coffee, reviewing the tactical layout of the Manhattan Supreme Court.

"Your blood tests came back from the mobile forensic lab," Mara said, setting a digital tablet on the desk. "The neurotoxin levels in your bloodstream are dropping, but you will experience severe withdrawal symptoms over the next forty-eight hours—sweats, migraines, and intense muscle tremors."

"I don't care," Adrian said, his fingers wrapped tightly around a glass of ice water. "I have felt nothing for nine years, Agent Reyes. Pain is a welcome change."

He looked at her, his dark eyes analyzing her face with sharp intensity. "Why did you risk your life throwing that tray, Mara? If Victor’s guard had drawn his weapon..."

"I don't like watching innocent people destroyed from the inside out, Mr. Vale," Mara replied quietly, her gaze unflinching. "My father was an honest union leader in Chicago. A corrupt corporate board framed him for embezzlement when I was sixteen. He spent eight years in prison before we proved his innocence. By the time he walked out, his mind was gone."

She looked out the high library window at the rain pouring down over the dark grounds.

"When I was assigned to your case four months ago and saw what Victor was doing to you... I promised myself I wouldn't let another good man be buried alive."

Adrian looked at her for a long moment. The cold, mechanical ice around his heart softened slightly, a deep, genuine respect taking root.

"Thank you, Mara," Adrian said softly.

"Don't thank me yet," Mara said, pulling out a map of the Manhattan Courthouse. "Tomorrow’s hearing is presided over by Judge Arthur Bennett. Bennett is on Victor’s payroll. He has already drafted the conservatorship order. The moment Victor steps up to the bench, Bennett will sign the paper, transferring your power of attorney immediately."

"Then we don't just present evidence to the judge," Adrian said, a ruthless strategic light dancing in his eyes. "We convert the closed hearing into an emergency public board meeting. Victor invited thirty of Vale Enterprises’ top shareholders and news reporters to sit in the gallery so he could announce his appointment as CEO immediately afterward."

"He built a stage to celebrate his victory," Mara realized, a small, cold smile appearing on her face.

"Exactly," Adrian nodded, leaning forward over the map. "He thinks he’s stepping onto a throne tomorrow at 9:00 AM. Instead... he’s stepping onto a gallows."
