Chapter 4 - The Courtroom Trap

The morning sun broke through the Manhattan smog, casting sharp, cold light across the granite steps of the Supreme Court Building on Centre Street.
By 8:30 AM, the gallery of Courtroom 402 was packed to capacity. High-society investors, corporate board members, and financial journalists filled the leather pews, whispering excitedly among themselves.
Victor Vale sat at the primary counsel table, wearing a three-thousand-dollar suit, his hair meticulously styled, a sleek leather briefcase resting beside him. Standing beside him was his lead attorney, Harrison Vance—a ruthless corporate defender known for crushing shareholder lawsuits.
Victor looked entirely relaxed, casually checking his gold wristwatch, completely unaware that the two private guards standing near the back doors were undercover federal agents monitoring his every move.
"Where is your brother, Mr. Vale?" Attorney Vance whispered, leaning down. "If he fails to appear, Judge Bennett will issue a bench warrant and execute the conservatorship by default."
"He’s probably slumped over in his armchair in Greenwich, hallucinating," Victor sneered quietly, a confident smirk on his face. "Dr. Kell gave him a double dose before we left the house last night. He won't even know what year it is."
At 8:55 AM, the double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.
A sudden hush fell over the gathered crowd.
Walking down the center aisle, flanked by Agent Mara Reyes and two senior federal prosecutors, was Adrian Vale.
He walked with an absolute, terrifying elegance. His charcoal suit was immaculate, his chest broad, his head held high. There was no tremor in his hands, no fog in his eyes. His gaze was fixed on Victor with the terrifying intensity of a predator lock-on.
Victor’s smirk completely vanished. He gasped, half-rising from his chair, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of the table.
"What... what is this?" Victor stammered. "How is he walking?!"
"Quiet!" Vance hissed, his eyes widening in shock as he took in Adrian’s commanding presence.
Adrian reached the petitioner’s table, pulling out a chair and sitting down smoothly. He didn't look at the crowd; he turned his head slowly, looking directly at Victor, and offered his younger brother a thin, icy smile.
"Good morning, Victor," Adrian said, his voice deep, clear, and ringing through the silent courtroom. "You look surprised to see me."
Before Victor could answer, the door behind the bench opened, and Judge Arthur Bennett walked out, sweeping his black robes around him as he took his seat at the high bench.
"Court is in session," Judge Bennett declared, striking his wooden gavel once. "We are here for the emergency competency and guardianship hearing regarding Mr. Adrian Vale."
Judge Bennett didn't even look toward Adrian’s table. He immediately picked up a thick fountain pen, opening the pre-drafted order on his desk.
"Having reviewed the medical affidavits submitted by Dr. Kell," Bennett announced smoothly, "this court finds that Mr. Adrian Vale lacks the mental capacity to manage his personal and corporate affairs. I am prepared to sign the full conservatorship order appointing Mr. Victor Vale as sole guardian—"
"Objection, Your Honor," a sharp, clear voice echoed through the courtroom.
Agent Mara Reyes stood up from the prosecution table, holding a black leather briefcase.

"Who are you, young woman?" Judge Bennett snapped, his eyes narrowing angrily. "This is a private civil proceeding! Sit down or I will have you removed by security!"
"Special Agent Mara Reyes, Federal Bureau of Investigation," Mara declared, walking down the center aisle toward the bench, holding up an emergency federal injunction signed by the Chief Judge of the United States District Court. "And this private civil proceeding is officially suspended under Federal Rule 60."
