Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Raid

At 11:30 AM, three process servers entered the corporate headquarters of Hale Logistics in downtown Chicago.

Margaret Hale was sitting at the head of the boardroom table, surrounded by her executive team and her chief corporate counsel, Arthur Sterling. She had spent the morning trying to draft a press release claiming the police incident at her home was a "private family misunderstanding involving an unhinged daughter-in-law."

The glass doors of the boardroom swung open.

A female process server walked in, holding a thick stack of legal documents. She walked straight past the security guards, approached Margaret, and set a legal packet directly on her laptop keyboard.

"Margaret Hale, you are formally served with a temporary restraining order, a petition for emergency child protection, and a civil summons for intentional infliction of emotional distress," the server declared loudly.

Before Margaret could even scream, a second process server stepped up to Evan, who was sitting three seats down, looking pale and miserable.

"Evan Hale, you are formally served with a petition for absolute divorce, emergency sole custody, and an asset freeze order issued by the Circuit Court of Cook County."

"What?!" Margaret shrieked, standing up so fast her leather chair tipped backward. "Arthur! Stop them!"

Arthur Sterling, a slick attorney in a three-piece suit, grabbed the papers and quickly scanned the top pages. His face drained of color.

"Margaret..." Sterling whispered, leaning close to her ear. "This isn't just a divorce filing. They've attached an emergency ex parte financial injunction signed by Judge Vance. All joint accounts between Evan and Nora are frozen. Furthermore, they've filed a formal notice of deposition for every executive in this room regarding corporate funds used to pay for your personal estate expenses."

"She can't do that!" Margaret screamed, her voice echoing through the glass boardroom. "This is my company! I own everything!"

"She can, Margaret," Sterling said, his voice trembling slightly. "Nora’s lawyer is Victoria Vance. Victoria doesn't bluff. If you used company funds to pay for that birthday dinner, or if Evan's salary was artificially inflated to pass money into your private trust, Victoria will pull our tax records into open court."

Evan sat frozen in his chair, staring at the divorce papers. His eyes landed on the front page: NORA HALE V. EVAN HALE — PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE AND SOLE CUSTODY.

"She changed the locks..." Evan muttered, looking up at his mother with a sudden, hollow realization. "Mom... she changed the locks on my house."

"Forget the house, you idiot!" Margaret snapped, turning her rage onto her son. "Look what your wife is doing to my reputation! You brought that woman into my family! You fix this now, or so help me God, I will strip you of your title and throw you out on the street!"

Evan looked at his mother—really looked at her. For the first time in his life, he saw the absolute, hideous absence of maternal love in her eyes. He didn't see a mother protecting her son; he saw a tyrant protecting her empire, willing to crush him under her boots just as easily as she had struck his daughter.

"You hit my daughter, Mom," Evan said, his voice barely audible.

"She knocked over my mushroom soup!" Margaret shrieked, completely devoid of shame. "She deserved to learn a lesson!"

Evan stood up slowly. He looked at the executives sitting around the table, all staring at him with pity and cold judgment. He picked up his coat, left the divorce papers on the table, and walked out of the boardroom without saying another word.
