Chapter 6 - The Broken Prince

Five days later, the temporary custody hearing took place at the Cook County Domestic Relations Court.
The hallway outside Courtroom 304 was tense. Margaret Hale arrived surrounded by four private security guards, wearing black sunglasses and a dark coat, looking like a disgraced politician. Her attorney, Arthur Sterling, looked exhausted, carrying three heavy leather binders.
Evan walked in behind them, completely alone. He looked like he hadn't slept or shaved in a week. His clothes were rumpled, his eyes were bloodshot, and he kept his distance from his mother, standing near the water fountain at the end of the hall.
When I walked into the concourse accompanied by Victoria Vance, Evan’s eyes locked onto me. He took a hesitant step forward, but Victoria stepped smoothly in front of him, raising one finger.
"Back off, Mr. Hale," Victoria said firmly. "You are subject to a temporary no-contact order."
"I just want to talk to my wife, please," Evan whispered, looking past Victoria at me. "Nora, please... ten minutes."
I looked at him calmly. "There’s nothing to talk about, Evan. Everything that needs to be said will be said in front of the judge."
Inside the courtroom, Judge Patricia Reyes took the bench. She was a stern, brilliant judge known for having zero tolerance for domestic games or wealthy posturing.
Arthur Sterling stood up first, trying desperately to regain control of the narrative. "Your Honor, my client, Evan Hale, is a loving, devoted father who has been completely cut off from his daughter due to an unfortunate, highly sensationalized family argument. We are requesting immediate, joint physical custody and the dismissal of the restraining order against the paternal grandmother, Margaret Hale."
Judge Reyes didn't look impressed. She adjusted her glasses and pulled up the court exhibit tablet.
"Mr. Sterling," Judge Reyes said, her tone cold and clinical. "I have reviewed the unedited video evidence submitted by the petitioner. I have also reviewed the medical reports from St. Agnes Hospital and the official police intake notes."
Judge Reyes looked directly at Margaret Hale.
"Mrs. Hale, your conduct in that video is appalling," the judge stated flatly. "Striking a two-year-old child with enough force to cause visible contusion is indefensible. The temporary restraining order barring you from coming within one thousand feet of minor child Maisie Hale is made permanent pending the outcome of your criminal trial."
Margaret flinched as if she had been slapped, clutching her pearls, but Sterling quickly whispered to her to keep her mouth shut.
Judge Reyes then turned her gaze to Evan.
"Mr. Hale," Judge Reyes said.
Evan stood up trembling. "Yes, Your Honor?"
"In that video, I watched you sit six feet away while your mother struck your child. I watched you lower your fork, look at your daughter, and then look down at your phone. You did not move. You did not intervene. You did not comfort your child."
"I... I was in shock, Your Honor!" Evan stammered, tears springing to his eyes. "I didn't know what to do!"
"A father's primary instinct is to protect his child, Mr. Hale," Judge Reyes replied sternly. "Shock does not excuse total, passive abandonment of parental duty. Temporary sole legal and physical custody of Maisie Hale is awarded exclusively to her mother, Nora Hale."
Evan dropped into his chair, burying his face in his hands, weeping openly in front of the entire courtroom.
"Mr. Hale will be allowed two hours of supervised visitation per week at a certified court facility," Judge Reyes added. "And he will undergo a mandatory thirty-day parental capability and psychological evaluation before any expansion of visitation is considered. Court is adjourned."
As Judge Reyes struck her gavel, Margaret stood up furiously, grabbing Sterling’s arm. "Appeal it! Appeal it right now!"
"Shut up, Margaret!" Evan suddenly yelled, his voice echoing loudly across the courtroom.
Everyone froze.
Evan stood up, facing his mother, his face red with a mixture of grief, rage, and profound shame.

"Shut up!" Evan shouted at her again, tears streaming down his face. "You destroyed my life! You destroyed my marriage! You hurt my daughter, and you made me stand there like a coward! I hate you! Do you hear me?! I hate you!"
Evan turned and sprinted out of the courtroom, slamming the heavy doors behind him, leaving Margaret standing alone in stunned, furious silence.
