Chapter 5 - The Counter-Attack

Margaret Hale was not a woman who surrendered.
Two days after the service at her office, Margaret launched a brutal, public smear campaign designed to destroy my credibility before our first custody hearing.
I was sitting in my kitchen, making breakfast for Maisie, when my phone began blowing up with notifications. A local tabloid blog—funded quietly by one of Margaret's public relations allies—had published an article with a sensational headline:
LOCAL PHILANTHROPIST MARGARET HALE ATTACKED BY UNSTABLE DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AT FAMILY DINNER.
The article contained leaked, heavily edited clips of the dinner footage—specifically cutting out the moment Margaret slapped Maisie, and showing only the moment I walked across the room and struck Evan three times. Accompanying the article was a statement from Margaret’s attorney, claiming I suffered from severe emotional instability, was an unfit mother, and had orchestrated the entire incident to extort money from the Hale family trust.
Ten minutes later, my landlord called. Margaret’s legal team had contacted the building management of my architectural firm’s office space, alleging that my business was involved in fraudulent activities.
"They're trying to drown you in noise, Nora," Victoria Vance told me over the phone when I called her office. "It's a classic deep-pockets tactic. They leak a false story, attack your livelihood, and hope you get terrified enough to accept a cheap settlement."
"What do we do?" I asked, my hands gripping the edge of the kitchen counter.
"We don't defend," Victoria replied calmly. "We counter-attack. Do you have the original, unedited video file from Tessa's phone?"
"Yes," I said. "I saved a high-definition copy directly from the cloud stream before she deleted her post."
"Good. We are releasing the full, unedited video to NBC Chicago and the Chicago Tribune in twenty minutes," Victoria instructed. "And we are filing an immediate defamation lawsuit against Margaret Hale personally, naming her PR firm as co-defendants. Let's see how her hospital board feels when the unedited video hits the evening news."
At 6:00 PM that evening, the lead story on the local news anchor’s desk was simple: HALE LOGISTICS CEO CHARGED WITH CHILD ABUSE AFTER UNEDITED VIDEO SURFACES.
The news broadcast played the full, crystal-clear audio and video. The public saw Margaret gripping two-year-old Maisie, saw the flat, brutal crack of her hand against the child’s small face, heard Maisie's agonizing scream, and saw Evan sitting passively with his fork in the air.
The public reaction was swift, violent, and absolute.
Within two hours, the comment sections were flooded with thousands of enraged parents demanding Margaret’s immediate arrest and conviction. By 9:00 PM, the Board of Directors at Saint Jude's Children's Hospital issued a formal press release announcing Margaret Hale’s immediate, forced resignation from the board.
By midnight, three major logistics clients canceled their multi-million-dollar shipping contracts with Hale Logistics, citing corporate ethical violations.
My phone rang at 1:00 AM. It was Evan.
I answered the call.
"Nora..." Evan sobbed into the receiver, sounding utterly broken. "Mom’s house is surrounded by news vans. The board just suspended her as CEO. Our family is ruined... everything is gone..."
"Your mother ruined herself, Evan," I said, sitting in the dark living room of my peaceful house, listening to Maisie’s soft, steady breathing from her bedroom monitor. "She thought her money gave her the right to hurt my child. She was wrong."

"Nora, please... can I see Maisie?" Evan pleaded, his voice cracking with desperate weeping. "I haven't seen her in three days. I miss her so much..."
"You can talk to my lawyer tomorrow, Evan," I replied softly. "Goodnight."
