Chapter 5 - The Gathering of the Blood

The west wing of the Vance estate was no longer a silent, cold gallery of the dead.
It had been converted into a bright, warm medical suite. Clara lay in a comfortable bed, her face pale but her eyes clear as she looked out at the rainy gardens. She was no longer sedated; the private medical team Julian had hired had flushed the chemical restraints from her system, and she was recovering quickly.
Lily sat on the edge of the bed, holding her grandmother’s hand, while Mrs. Gable stood nearby, holding the baby.
The door opened, and Julian walked in. He had removed his overcoat and suit jacket, wearing only a soft cashmere sweater. He looked tired, but for the first time in fifteen years, his face was relaxed, the tension gone from his jaw.
"Julian," Clara said, her voice filled with emotion.
"How are you feeling?" Julian asked, walking over to the bed and kissing her forehead.
"I’m getting better," she smiled. "But more importantly... look at them."
Julian looked at Lily, who was watching him with a mixture of awe and curiosity. He walked over to her, kneeling beside the bed.
"Lily," he said gently. "I have something to tell you."
"Are you... are you my dad?" she whispered.
Julian’s eyes filled with rare, unshed tears. He nodded slowly. "Yes, Lily. I am your dad. My father... he kept us apart for a long time. He told me I could never have children, and he told your grandmother that I didn't want you. But he was wrong. I have been looking for you my entire life, even when I didn't know you existed."
Lily let out a small sob, throwing her arms around his neck. Julian held her tightly, his large hand cradling her head. He felt a profound, overwhelming warmth fill his chest—a feeling of absolute completeness that he had never experienced in his cold, lonely life.
"And him?" Lily asked, pulling back and pointing to the baby. "What is his name?"
Julian walked over to Mrs. Gable, carefully taking his newborn son into his arms. The baby was awake, his winter-blue eyes looking up at him with quiet curiosity.
"His name is Arthur," Julian said softly. "But we will call him Artie. He will not grow up to be like the man who built this house. He will grow up to be a good man. A man who knows how to love."

Clara smiled through her tears. "Thank you, Julian. You saved us."
"We saved each other, Clara," Julian said, holding his son close as Lily wrapped her hand around his fingers. "The Vance family is finally home."
