Chapter 6 - Rebuilding from the Ruins

Six months later.
The Vance estate was unrecognizable.
The heavy black iron gates had been replaced with warm, mahogany arches, and the manicured, sterile lawns were now filled with colorful flowerbeds and a modern playground. The sound of children's laughter echoed through the stone pillars that had once stood as silent sentinels of a mafia-like financial empire.
Julian sat in his library, but he was not reviewing financial manifests or court documents. He was reading a children’s book to Lily, who sat beside him on the deep leather sofa, her head resting on his shoulder.
"And they lived happily ever after," Julian finished, closing the book with a smile.
"Do you think we’ll live happily ever after, Dad?" Lily asked, looking up at him.
"I know we will, Lily," Julian said, kissing her hair. "We’ve already beaten the hardest part."
The door opened, and Clara walked in, carrying a chubby, laughing Artie. She looked healthy, her skin glowing, the shadows of her years in hiding completely gone.
"The lawyers are here, Julian," Clara said, setting Artie down on the rug, where he immediately began crawling toward Lily. "The restructuring of the trust is complete."
Julian stood up, walking over to his desk, where Elias and a team of corporate attorneys were waiting.
"Mr. Vance," the lead attorney said, handing him a thick stack of documents. "This is the final deed of the Vance Family Trust. As per your instructions, fifty percent of all assets from Vance Enterprises have been transferred into a public charity fund—The Clara and Lily Foundation. The fund will provide housing, medical care, and legal protection for abandoned children and single mothers in the Boston area."
"And my uncle’s shares?" Julian asked.
"Victor’s shares have been liquidated to cover the legal settlements for the victims of his financial schemes," the attorney replied. "He’s currently serving a twenty-year sentence at a federal penitentiary. He won't be coming back."
Julian nodded, signing his name at the bottom of the document with a firm, decisive stroke. He looked out the window at the sunny gardens.

"We are no longer a dynasty of shadows, Elias," Julian said.
"No, boss," Elias smiled. "You're just a family now."
