Chapter 4 - Midnight Blue

The grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel was a sea of glittering crystal chandeliers, champagne flutes, and wealthy elites dressed in black-tie attire. Camera flashes popped incessantly near the red carpet entrance as property tycoons, politicians, and media personalities made their appearances.
Mason Reed stood near the central ice sculpture, holding a glass of vintage champagne. He wore a crisp tailored tuxedo, his hair slicked back perfectly. Beside him stood Claire, wearing an expensive gold sequin dress that looked slightly too large for her thin frame. She looked uncomfortable, shifting her weight from foot to foot as Mason loudly bragged to a group of investors about his new position at Apex Development.
"Yes, the transition was seamless," Mason chuckled, taking a sip of his drink. "When opportunity strikes, you have to cut away the dead weight and move forward. Resilience is key in this market."
"Speaking of resilience, Mason," an investor replied, "didn't you survive that terrible apartment fire on Elm Street a few months back?"
Mason’s face stiffened slightly, but he quickly recovered his charming smile. "Ah, yes. A tragic accident. Faulty wiring. I did everything I could to manage the situation, of course, but one must look to the future."
"Faulty wiring?" a deep, booming voice echoed behind them. "Is that what you’re calling Thermite-B accelerants these days, Mr. Reed?"
The chatter around the ice sculpture died instantly.
Mason turned, his smile vanishing as the crowd parted like the Red Sea.
Walking into the ballroom was Victor Vance. He looked commanding in a bespoke charcoal tuxedo, his presence casting a long, intimidating shadow over the room.
But it was not Victor who caused the entire room to draw a collective, gasping breath.
Arm-in-arm with Victor walked Emma Carter.
She was stunning. The midnight-blue silk gown clung to her curves with flawless precision, cascading to the marble floor like liquid moonlight. The high asymmetrical collar elegantly concealed her neck grafts while leaving her right shoulder bare, highlighting the breathtaking sapphire necklace that caught every light in the room. Her dark hair was swept up in an intricate, regal chignon. She walked with complete grace, her head held high, her spine straight as steel.
She did not look like a victim. She looked like a queen stepping onto her throne.
Mason’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers, shattering onto the marble floor. "Emma...?" he gasped, his face draining of every drop of color.
Claire stared in open-mouthed shock, her eyes darting from Emma’s radiant appearance to the terrifying man standing beside her. "Mason... is that... is that your ex-girlfriend?"
Emma stopped ten feet away from Mason. Her expression was cool, composed, and utterly devoid of the pain she had felt four weeks ago.
"Hello, Mason," Emma said softly. Her voice carried clearly across the quieted ballroom. "You forgot your wineglasses at the apartment. But I see you bought a new tuxedo with my medical settlement."
Whispers erupted across the room like wildfire. Investors exchanged startled glances. Camera flashes began popping frantically as journalists recognized both Emma’s face from the news reports and the legendary Victor Vance beside her.
"Emma, what are you doing here?!" Mason stammered, stepping forward, his hands trembling. "How did you... who gave you permission to come here?!"
"I invited her, Mr. Reed," Victor Vance said, his voice dropping like a hammer onto an anvil. "As my guest. And as the chief witness in an ongoing federal investigation into arson, wire fraud, and grand larceny."
"Federal investigation?!" Mason squeaked, panic rising in his chest. "That fire was an accident! The insurance settled!"
"The insurance settled because your boss, Julian Drake, bribed the municipal fire inspector," Victor announced loudly, addressing the entire room. He reached into his jacket and pulled out a stack of high-resolution financial documents. "These are the bank records showing fifty thousand dollars wired from Apex Development to Mason Reed three days before the Elm Street fire. And these are the wire transfers showing Mr. Reed transferring two hundred thousand dollars of Miss Carter's medical settlement into offshore accounts."
"That’s a lie!" a sharp voice barked from the VIP balcony above.
Julian Drake descended the sweeping staircase, flanked by three heavy security guards. His face was flushed with anger. "Victor Vance! You have no right to come into my event and throw wild accusations at my staff! Security, escort these people out immediately!"
The four security guards moved forward, but before they could lay a finger on Victor or Emma, Frank and ten armed Vance security agents stepped out from the shadows, blocking the guards instantly.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you, Drake," Victor said calmly, leaning against his cane. "Because the men standing outside this hotel aren't my guards. They are agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the State Arson Task Force."
The grand glass doors of the ballroom burst open.

A dozen FBI agents in blue jackets flooded the room, led by a stern woman holding a federal warrant.
"Julian Drake! Mason Reed!" the lead agent shouted, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit arson, insurance fraud, attempt to commit murder, and wire fraud! Step away from the crowd and put your hands behind your backs!"
