Chapter 7 - The Shadows of the Past

With the trial finished, the media frenzy slowly subsided, leaving behind a tranquil silence at the Blackwood Cliff estate.

Emma’s medical recovery was nearly complete. Dr. Helen performed her final micro-laser procedure, leaving Emma’s jaw skin smooth, soft, and remarkably blended with her natural skin tone. A fine, pale silver line remained along her left collarbone and elbow—a reminder of where she had been, but no longer a barrier to her future.

She had passed her physical recertification exams with flying colors. The State Board of Nursing officially reinstated her active emergency room license.

Yet, despite her victory, Emma noticed a subtle shift in Victor Vance.

Over the past two weeks, Victor had grown quiet. He spent long hours in his glass-walled study overlooking the crashing waves, holding an old silver pocket watch that had belonged to his late sister. He began pulling back, as if building an invisible wall between himself and Emma.

One evening, while heavy storm clouds gathered over the ocean, Emma walked into the study.

Victor was standing by the window, a glass of dark scotch in his hand. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket; his dark hair was slightly unkempt, his face etched with weary contemplation.

"You're retreating, Victor," Emma said softly, stepping into the room and closing the heavy glass door behind her.

Victor didn't turn around right away. "The trial is over, Emma. Drake is in prison. Mason is broke and jailed. Your license is restored, and your bank account is full. You have your life back."

"And you're acting like a man preparing to say goodbye," Emma challenged, stepping closer to him.

Victor sighed, a deep, tired sound that seemed to come from the bottom of his soul. He turned to face her, setting his scotch glass down on the mahogany desk.

"You are a free woman, Emma," Victor said, his dark eyes brimming with a complex mix of intense passion and deep restraint. "You came into my life broken by a man who controlled you, manipulated you, and made you feel trapped. I promised myself I would never become another man who held you captive."

Emma stopped a foot away from him. "You think you're holding me captive?"

"I am a man of shadows, Emma," Victor said softly, his voice trembling slightly. "I run a syndicate. I deal with dangerous men, cold logistics, and brutal realities. You are a healer. You belong in a bright, clean emergency room saving lives, not locked away in a crime boss’s fortress on a cliff."

He reached out, his hand hesitating in the air before gently brushing a strand of dark hair away from her face.

"I love you, Emma," Victor whispered, revealing his heart completely for the first time. "I have loved you since the night I watched you carry that coward out of the flames. But because I love you, I have to let you go. You deserve a peaceful, normal life."

Emma stared at him, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Then, slowly, a soft, beautiful smile broke across her face.

"You really are an idiot sometimes, Victor Vance," she whispered.

Victor blinked, startled. "What?"

Emma reached up, grabbed the lapels of his dark vest, and pulled his head down to hers.

She kissed him.

It was not a soft, hesitant kiss. It was deep, fierce, and full of every ounce of passion, gratitude, and fierce desire that had been building between them for months.

Victor froze for a fraction of a second in sheer shock, then his arms wrapped around her waist like bands of tempered steel, pulling her flush against his broad chest as he returned the kiss with a desperate, breathtaking intensity.

When they finally broke apart, both panted for air, their foreheads resting against each other in the warm light of the study.

"I spent eleven years surviving on my own, Victor," Emma breathed, her dark eyes flashing with absolute certainty. "I aged out of foster care alone. I earned my nursing degree alone. I survived a fire alone. I don't want a 'normal, peaceful' life with some boring man who doesn't understand what it means to fight for what matters."

She wrapped her arms tightly around his neck, looking straight into his eyes.

"I want you, Victor Vance. I want the man who stood by me, fought for me, healed me, and looked at my scars like they were war medals. And if you think you're kicking me out of this house, you're going to need more than Frank to move me."

May you like

Victor looked at her, his dark eyes filling with a raw, radiant joy that transformed his entire face. He let out a deep, booming laugh—a sound of pure freedom—and lifted her completely off her feet, spinning her around in the center of the study.

"God help me, Emma Carter," Victor smiled, pressing his lips to hers again. "You really are the most dangerous woman I’ve ever met."
