Chapter 8 - The Phoenix Clinic

Six months later.
The morning sun broke over the downtown medical district, reflecting off the glass facade of a brand-new, three-story state-of-the-art building.
Above the double glass doors sat bold, silver lettering: THE CARTER-VANCE REHABILITATION CENTER & BURN FOUNDATION.
It was a joint venture funded by Emma’s restitution money and the Vance Foundation. The facility provided free advanced reconstructive surgery, hydrotherapy, psychological counseling, and legal assistance for low-income victims of violent crimes and industrial accidents.
Inside the bustling main lobby, nurses in crisp navy scrubs moved efficiently between treatment rooms.
Emma stood at the central nursing station, wearing her dark blue scrubs, a stethoscope draped around her neck, and a digital chart in her hand. Her left arm moved smoothly as she adjusted an IV bag overhead, her movements precise, effortless, and entirely pain-free.
"Nurse Carter," a young junior nurse said, rushing up to the desk. "Room 104 is ready for the new intake. It's a firefighter from the 4th Battalion who suffered second-degree burns on his arms."
"I'll take him myself, Sarah," Emma smiled warmly. "Make sure he gets the hydro-gel dressings ready."
As Emma stepped out from behind the desk, she heard a commotion near the front entrance.
A sleek black town car had pulled up to the curb, flanked by two Vance Security vehicles.
Frank opened the front door of the clinic, holding it wide as Victor Vance walked into the lobby. He wore an immaculate navy suit, looking every inch the powerful tycoon, but his eyes instantly searched the busy lobby until they locked onto Emma.
The entire staff cleared a respectful path for him, but Victor paid no attention to the whispers. He walked straight over to Emma, pulled her into his arms, and kissed her soundly on the lips in front of the entire reception team.
"Victor!" Emma laughed, turning pink as the junior nurses giggled softly. "I'm working!"
"I am the chairman of the board," Victor said smoothly, a dashing smirk playing on his lips. "I am simply conducting a surprise inspection of my chief executive director."
"And how is the inspection going, Mr. Chairman?" Emma teased, resting her hands against his chest.
"The facility is magnificent," Victor said, his tone shifting into deep warmth as he looked around the bright, hopeful room filled with recovering patients and dedicated staff. "And the director is breathtaking."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek velvet envelope. "I brought you something from the state licensing commission."
Emma opened the envelope. Inside was a formal gold-embossed certificate naming the Carter-Vance Center as the primary regional teaching hospital for trauma and burn recovery.
Emma gasped, tears of joy sparkling in her eyes. "Victor... this means we can train twenty new burn-specialist nurses every year!"

"You did this, Emma," Victor said softly, cupping her face with his warm hands. "You built this sanctuary out of the ashes they tried to leave you in."
Emma leaned into his touch, her heart overflowing. "We built it together, Victor. We built it together."
