Chapter 2 - Ethan’s Revelation

That evening, back in the extended-stay hotel suite, Blake sat at the small kitchenette table, organizing his timeline. Ethan was sitting on the carpet, quietly assembling a Lego spaceship.

Blake watched his son, his heart aching at how resilient the six-year-old was trying to be. But trauma leaves footprints, and Ethan had started flinching whenever someone knocked on a hotel door.

Blake knelt beside him. “Buddy, can I ask you a question about the night of the party?”

Ethan stopped building, his small hands tightening around a plastic brick. He didn't look up. “Did I make you mad?”

“Never,” Blake said softly, lifting Ethan’s chin so their eyes met. “I’m not mad at you. I’m just trying to understand something. When Grandma Eleanor put you outside... did anyone else say anything to you before you went out the door?”

Ethan bit his lower lip, thinking hard. “Aunt Carrie was there.”

“What did Aunt Carrie say?”

“She laughed,” Ethan whispered, a tear slipping down his cheek. “She said, ‘Let’s see if he can stand out there long enough to cool his temper, or if he’ll freeze like a snowman.’ And Mom... Mom told her to close the kitchen blinds so the guests wouldn't look at the window.”

Blake’s blood ran cold. It wasn't just Eleanor’s cruelty or Vera’s indifference. It was collective, calculated abuse disguised as discipline, witnessed and mocked by multiple adult family members.

Blake pulled out his phone, opened a secure voice-memo app, and calmly asked Ethan to repeat what he remembered. He recorded every word, backed up the file to cloud storage, and knew that the war had just shifted from a bitter custody battle to something much darker.
