Eleanor Holland sat in the gallery, clutching her designer handbag like a shield, whispering frantically to her high-priced divorce attorney, Richard Vance.

“Counsel,” Judge Harrison’s deep voice cut through the murmurs of the courtroom. “I have reviewed the emergency petition, the medical discharge papers from the pediatric emergency room, the verified weather data for December twelfth, and the impeached affidavit submitted by Ms. Carrie Holland.”

Richard Vance stood up nervously, adjusting his tie. “Your Honor, my clients maintain that the incident was a momentary lapse in household disciplinary judgment, and that Mr. Carlson is weaponizing a routine domestic disagreement—”

“Routine?” Judge Harrison interrupted, his spectacles sliding down his nose as he fixed a glare of pure ice on the defense attorney. “Counselor, leaving a six-year-old child outside in sub-freezing temperatures without winter clothing while fifty adults drink champagne inside is not a ‘routine disagreement.’ It is criminal neglect.”

Eleanor let out a sharp gasp, half-rising from her seat before her lawyer yanked her back down by her sleeve.
