Chapter 4 - The Subpoena Storm

The fallout hit the Holland family like a category-five hurricane.
By the end of the week, Dick Holland was served with federal and state depositions regarding corporate financial ties to the family real estate holdings, while Carrie Holland received a formal notice to appear before a judge to explain her irreconcilable timeline of perjury.
Vera appeared at Blake’s temporary office unannounced, cornering him in the lobby while he was waiting for Marcus. She looked frantic, her designer coat disheveled, her composure completely shattered.
“Have you lost your absolute mind, Blake?!” Vera hissed, grabbing his arm. “You’re dragging my family through the mud! My sister is facing legal trouble because of some stupid scheduling mix-up!”
Blake gently peeled her fingers off his coat sleeve, stepping back with chilling detachment.
“A scheduling mix-up? She signed a sworn statement lying under oath to help you frame me for domestic violence while your mother left our six-year-old son to freeze in the snow,” Blake’s voice was dangerously quiet. “You chose your family’s theater over your own son, Vera.”

“I was trying to protect our life!” Vera cried out, her voice cracking in a desperate bid for sympathy. “If you just drop the custody suit and agree to counseling, we can fix this. Mom just... Mom gets intense, you know how she is—”
“I know exactly who she is,” Blake interrupted. “And I know who you chose to become. Save your breath for the judge, Vera. You’re going to need every excuse you can invent.”
