Chapter 5 - The Silent Return

The next morning, the sun rose over Savannah, casting a bright, mocking light over the wet streets.
At the hospital, the execution of the protective order was silent and devastating. Two uniform sheriff's deputies walked into Lily's room just as the morning shift began. Mark and Sarah were sitting on the small sofa, drinking coffee, looking smug and relaxed.
"Mark Vale?" the lead deputy asked, stepping forward.
Mark stood up, his professional smile instantly appearing. "Yes, Deputy? Is there a problem with the parking?"
"You are being served with an emergency ex-parte protective order," the deputy said, handing him a stack of official, court-stamped documents. "You are ordered to immediately vacate the premises. You are legally barred from coming within five hundred feet of Elena Vale and Lily Vale. If you attempt to contact them, or fail to comply, you will be arrested immediately."
Mark’s face turned a violent, mottled red. He looked at the papers, then at me, his eyes flashing with a murderous fury. "Elena! What is the meaning of this?! This is absurd! I am her father!"
"Not anymore, Mark," I said, standing beside Lily's bed.
"Elena, you're making a huge mistake," Sarah hissed, her perfect makeup cracking with panic. "You can't do this to us!"
"Step back, ma'am," the second deputy warned, placing his hand on his holster as Sarah took a step toward me. "Pack your things and leave. Now."
With the deputies watching their every move, Mark and Sarah had no choice but to walk out of the hospital, their heads bowed as the staff and patients stared at them in shocked silence.
I took Lily home that afternoon.
My historic house felt different now. The locks had been changed, the security system upgraded, and Evelyn’s private security detail was stationed quietly down the street.
Lily sat on the sofa, wrapped in her favorite pink blanket, her face finally free of the terror that had consumed her. She looked up at me, her green eyes—so like my mother’s—bright with a quiet curiosity.
"Mommy," she whispered. "Are they ever coming back?"
I knelt beside her, kissing her forehead gently. "No, baby. They are never, ever coming back. We are safe now."
"Can we stay here?"
"For now, yes," I said. "But soon, we are going to start a whole new adventure. Just you and me."
That evening, my phone buzzed. It was an email from Mark's personal account—a desperate, threatening message disguised as a legal warning.
Elena,
You think this little stunt is going to work? You’ve humiliated me in front of the hospital staff. If you don't drop this ridiculous order by Friday, I will file for full custody on Monday morning. I have the school board’s full support, and my lawyers will make sure you never see a dime of my money. This is your last warning.
Mark.
I smiled, a cold, victorious feeling settling in my chest. I didn't reply. I forwarded the email directly to Evelyn, who added it to our growing mountain of evidence.

They thought they had until Monday.
They had no idea their execution date was scheduled for Saturday night.
