Chapter 6 - The Charity Gala

The grand ballroom of the Savannah Riverfront Hotel was a sea of glittering chandeliers, black-tie tuxedos, and silk evening gowns. The Bayside High Annual Charity Gala was the social event of the season, a night where the wealthy and influential of Savannah gathered to write tax-deductible checks and praise themselves for their generosity.

Mark stood near the entrance, looking every bit the triumphant king of his domain. His black tuxedo was custom-tailored, a silk rose pinned to his lapel. Beside him, Sarah wore an elegant emerald green gown, her hair styled in a perfect, classic updo. They were laughing, clinking glasses with the mayor and several prominent school board members.

They had convinced themselves that my silence over the past three days meant I had backed down. They thought the protective order was just a temporary tantrum they could easily sweep under the rug.

I stood in the shadows of the mezzanine balcony, looking down at them.

I wore a simple, elegant black dress, my hair pulled back, my face calm. Beside me was Evelyn Vance and a young, brilliant IT specialist she had hired for the evening.

"Are the feeds ready?" Evelyn asked the specialist.

"Ready and locked," the young man replied, his fingers flying across the keys of his laptop. "The main projection screen behind the stage is connected to my receiver. Once the school board president finishes his introduction, I’ll override the system."

"Perfect," Evelyn said, her eyes locked on Mark. "Let's begin the show."

At 8:30 PM, the chime of a crystal glass echoed through the ballroom. The school board president, a wealthy local developer named Arthur Pendelton, stepped up to the microphone on the grand stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome," Arthur said, his voice amplified by the massive sound system. "Tonight, we celebrate the incredible success of the Bayside High Charity Fund. Over the past year, we have raised record amounts to support our community's youth. And none of this would be possible without the tireless dedication, the vision, and the profound integrity of our beloved principal, Mark Vale!"

The ballroom erupted into thunderous applause. Mark smiled warmly, raising his glass to the crowd as he prepared to walk up the stage steps to give his acceptance speech.

"And now," Arthur continued, "let us watch a short video highlighting the impact of Mark’s work over the past year."

The lights in the grand ballroom dimmed.

The massive projection screen behind the stage flickered, glowing bright in the darkness. Mark took his place on the stage, turning to face the screen with a proud, expectant smile.

But the video that began to play was not the promotional clip the school board had approved.
