Chapter 7 - The Revelation

The screen went black, and then, a single, high-definition image appeared.

It was a scanned copy of a Cayman Islands bank statement, registered to a private shell company called M&S Logistics. The account balance was displayed in bold, glowing numbers: $154,200.

A murmur of confusion ran through the crowd of two hundred guests. Mark’s smile froze, his eyes widening as he stared at the document.

"What is this?" Arthur Pendelton whispered, looking toward the AV booth in the back of the room. "Turn this off. This is the wrong file."

But before the AV staff could react, the audio system crackled to life.

"Elena is a fool," Mark’s recorded voice boomed through the massive ballroom speakers, loud, clear, and dripping with contempt. "Once the charity audit is cleared next month, I’ll transfer the remaining funds to the Cayman account. We’ll file for divorce, I’ll claim she’s unfit... She’ll be left with nothing, Sarah. Exactly what she deserves."

The silence that fell over the grand ballroom was sudden, heavy, and absolute.

Guests froze, their champagne glasses suspended in mid-air. The mayor’s jaw dropped. Sarah, standing near the front of the stage, turned a sickly, translucent shade of white, her hand flying to her mouth.

On the screen, the bank statement dissolved, replaced by a series of text messages between Mark and Sarah, dated over the past six months, planning the embezzlement and discussing how to keep me isolated.

And then, the final blow.

A audio file, recorded just four days ago in the master bedroom, played through the speakers.

"Is she still crying?" Sarah’s recorded voice asked.

"Who cares?" Mark’s voice replied with a cold chuckle. "She fell down the stairs because she didn't know when to shut up. The doctor bought the accident story. Elena won't do anything. She’s too weak to fight back."

The ballroom erupted into absolute, deafening chaos.

"Oh my God!" a woman in the front row screamed, covering her face. "He threw his own daughter down the stairs!"

"This is monstrous!" another guest yelled.

Mark stood on the stage, the bright white light of the projector shining directly across his face, exposing his complete, public ruin. His eyes darted frantically around the room, looking for an escape, but the crowd of his former friends and supporters was already pulling back from him like he was a leper.

"It’s a lie!" Mark screamed into the microphone, his voice cracking with panic. "It’s a deepfake! Someone hacked the system! Arthur, you have to believe me!"

But Arthur Pendelton stepped back, his face filled with a profound, stomach-churning disgust. "Get away from me, Mark."
