Chapter 14 - The Legacy of Poison

The truth about Ethan’s death hung over the gym like a dark, heavy shroud. Thomas walked slowly toward the framed photograph of his brother hanging by the entrance. He touched the polished wood frame, his thumb tracing the edges of Ethan’s victorious smile.

For three years, Thomas had believed his brother’s heart had simply failed under the stress of peak athletic competition. He had channeled his grief into honor, into building a legacy that transcended revenge. But now, learning that Ethan’s life had been stolen by a calculated chemical sabotage executed by Victor Vance’s syndicate ignited a white-hot ember deep within his soul.

David Chen walked over, holding a secure encrypted tablet. "I just received the sealed medical records from the state coroner’s secondary archive, Thomas. When we subpoenaed Grant Cole’s estate records last week, we uncovered an anonymous payment made to the chief toxicologist twelve hours after Ethan’s autopsy. The payment originated from an account tied directly to Vanguard Apex."

"It's true," David confirmed softly, looking at Thomas with deep sorrow. "Victor Vance didn't just want to control the real estate. He wanted to destroy any fighter who couldn't be bought. Ethan refused to throw his final match against Mason. So Victor made sure Ethan never fought again."

Thomas closed his eyes. He took a long, slow breath, feeling the air expand his lungs, centering his weight through his hips down to the soles of his feet. He remembered the words he had spoken to the ten-year-old boy only three days ago: Balance doesn't come from your feet. It comes from right here. If you are grounded in humility, no one in this world can ever push you over.

When Thomas opened his eyes, the anger was gone—replaced by an absolute, terrifying clarity of purpose.

He turned to Mason Cole. "Why did you come here to tell us this, Mason? You could have stayed quiet. You could have completed your probation and disappeared."

Mason stepped forward, dropping his gym bag to the floor. "Because I want to help you destroy him, Thomas. I know Victor Vance’s fighters. I trained with them at his private camp in Montana for two years. I know their combinations, their blind spots, and the dirty tactics they use when the referees aren't looking. Let me spar with you and Marcus. Let me be your wall for the next ten days."

Marcus looked at Mason, his eyes skeptical. "You want us to trust you? After everything your family did?"

"You shouldn't trust me," Mason admitted openly, his head bowed. "I don't deserve your trust. But I don't want my father’s legacy or Victor’s money to define the rest of my life. If coaching youth wrestling taught me anything, it’s that a sport without honor is just legal assault. Let me help you save this gym. It’s the only way I can ever pay back a fraction of what I stole from Ethan."

Thomas walked over to Mason. He looked down at the former champion’s trembling hands, then looked into his eyes. Thomas extended his right hand.

"Be here at five o'clock every morning," Thomas said firmly. "No camera crews. No excuses. If you slack off for one second, I throw you out myself."

Mason grabbed Thomas’s hand, squeezing it with fierce gratitude. "Five o'clock. I'll be here at four."
