Chapter 4 - Echoes in the Dark

It was midnight at the Hale Academy, two weeks before the fight. The physical transformation in Thomas was subtle but undeniable. His skin was tight and clear, his breath deep and silent. His white beard was trimmed, and his eyes burned with a steady, unbreakable focus.
He stood in the center of the dark ring, his feet moving in soft, rhythmic patterns across the canvas. Step, pivot, dip, counter.
Marcus sat on a bench in the corner, watching him in awe. "You're moving faster than you did ten years ago, Thomas."
"I am not faster, Marcus," Thomas said without stopping his movement. "I am simply not wasting time. When you are young, you move your entire body to accomplish a goal. When you are old, you only move what is necessary."
The heavy wooden front door opened softly, and David Chen walked into the gym, holding his laptop. His expression was unusually grave.
"What is it, David?" Thomas asked, coming to a stop and wiping sweat from his forehead with a towel.
David set the laptop on the edge of the canvas. "I did a deep dive into Cole Enterprises' financial records and their sports promotional branch. Grant Cole didn't just agree to this fight for publicity. He’s shorting the promotional company’s stock and betting heavily through offshore accounts on a first-round knockout."
"Of course he is," Marcus spat. "The man is a snake."
"It’s worse than that," David continued, turning the screen to face them. "Fifteen years ago, when Ethan had his accident on Interstate 65... do you remember the trucking logistics company that owned the semi-truck?"
Thomas froze. The towel in his hands fell still. "Vanguard Logistics."
"Vanguard Logistics was a subsidiary owned by a holding group called Apex Capital," David said softly, his voice trembling with controlled outrage. "Apex Capital was founded and operated by Grant Cole."
The air in the room suddenly turned freezing cold. Marcus stood up, his jaw dropping in shock. Viktor, who had been lifting heavy iron plates in the back, stopped cold, the heavy metal clanging against the rubber floor.
Thomas didn't speak for a long time. He turned his eyes toward the dark ceiling, where Ethan’s banner hung in the quiet darkness.
Fifteen years ago, a reckless, overworked truck driver under Apex Capital’s brutal time quotas had crossed the median during a storm, destroying Thomas’s life. Grant Cole had settled the lawsuit quietly through high-priced corporate insurance lawyers, wiping his hands of the blood without ever seeing the faces of the victims.
To Grant Cole, Ethan Hale’s death had been nothing more than a line item on an insurance write-off. To Mason Cole, Thomas had been just another nameless old man to push into the dirt for views.
Thomas slowly let out a long, quiet breath. The subtle shift in his aura was so profound that even Marcus took a half-step back. The grief, the sadness, and the quiet resignation that had defined Thomas Hale for fifteen years melted away completely, leaving behind an engine of pure, unadulterated resolve.
"He took my son," Thomas said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "And now his son wants to take my dignity."

Thomas looked up at his three champions.
"We are not just going to fight, gentlemen," Thomas whispered. "We are going to dismantle them."
