Chapter 18 - The Falling Shadow

Gregor Volkov lay on his back, gasping for air after the heavy throw. But before Thomas could secure a ground submission, Kai Tanaka sprinted into the ring without a tag, driving a brutal soccer kick toward Thomas’s head while he was grounded.

"Watch out, Thomas!" Mason Cole screamed from the corner.

Thomas’s reflexes, honed by years of disciplined martial arts and thousands of hours of sparring, responded instantly. He pulled his head back, letting Tanaka’s foot graze his chin, then wrapped his legs around Tanaka’s standing leg, sweeping the dangerous kick-boxer onto the canvas.

Now all four men were inside the ring in an unsanctioned, chaotic brawl. Referee Miller pretended to try to break them up, but purposefully stood in front of Thomas, blocking his sightline as Volkov recovered and tackled Marcus against the turnbuckle.

"This is a setup!" David Chen yelled from ringside, slamming his fist onto the press table. "The referee is actively assisting Vance’s fighters!"

Victor Vance stood at ringside, shouting orders. "Break his shoulder! Target the right shoulder, Volkov!"

Volkov grabbed Thomas’s right arm, applying a brutal double-wrist lock (Kimura) while Tanaka pinned Thomas’s feet to the mat. The crowd gasped in horror as Thomas’s surgically repaired right shoulder was twisted into an unnatural position.

Pain exploded through Thomas’s body—a blinding, white-hot fire that threatened to plunge him into unconsciousness. Images of his previous injury, of his brother’s hospital bed, and of the kids at the center flashed before his eyes.

In the VIP suite, Victor Vance lowered his scotch glass, a cruel smile spreading across his lips. "It's over."

Inside the ring, Volkov leaned all his weight onto the joint, trying to rip the shoulder from its socket. "Tap out, little hero!" Volkov grunted into Thomas’s ear. "Tap out or I break it forever!"

Thomas looked across the mat. He saw Marcus fighting off Tanaka with sheer willpower, bleeding from a cut above his eye, refusing to yield. He saw Mason Cole screaming encouragement from the corner. He saw the kids in the front row, holding their breath, waiting for their mentor to stand.

Thomas didn't tap. He took a deep, abdominal breath, centering his mind amidst the agony. He remembered the brass key resting beneath his gi at home. He remembered Ethan’s calm, reassuring voice from years ago: “Pain is just noise, Thomas. Focus on the center.”

Instead of fighting against Volkov’s leverage, Thomas relaxed his shoulder completely, allowing his joint to slide slightly with the motion rather than resisting it. Then, using his core strength, Thomas inverted his hips, driving his left heel directly into Volkov’s throat.

CRACK!

Volkov’s grip broke instantly as he clutched his throat, coughing violently and rolling away.

Thomas popped back to his feet, his right shoulder throbbing, but fully functional. He stepped back into his grounded, classical stance, his eyes burning with an unshakeable, luminous light.

"Marcus!" Thomas called out.

Marcus threw Tanaka off him, turning to face Thomas. Without a word spoken, the two men executed a perfectly timed double-team combination they had practiced at 5:00 AM every morning. Marcus drove a devastating series of body hooks into Tanaka, forcing the striker into Thomas’s range. Thomas caught Tanaka in a flying triangle choke, dragging the kick-boxer to the mat while Marcus blocked Volkov from interfering.

Within eight seconds, Kai Tanaka tapped out frantically against Thomas’s thigh.

Referee Miller was forced to step in and pull Thomas off. Tanaka was out cold.

Now, only Gregor Volkov remained.
