Chapter 3 - The Public Debut

The press conference was held in the grand ballroom of the Anders Corporate Headquarters in downtown Providence. The room was packed to the gills with reporters, television cameras, and flash bulbs that created a continuous, blinding sheet of white light.
Behind the backstage curtain, Eleanor felt her legs shaking. She was wearing a beautifully tailored navy silk dress that Evelyn had acquired for her within hours, long sleeves covering her bruises, a masterfully applied layer of makeup concealing the swelling on her jaw.
Michael stood beside her, his custom charcoal suit immaculate, his expression serene. He looked like a man who was exactly where he wanted to be.
"Just remember," Michael whispered, his voice a low, steady anchor amid the chaos outside the curtain. "You don't have to look at the cameras. Look at me. If a question makes you uncomfortable, squeeze my hand, and I will handle it. We are in control here, Eleanor."
"Why are you doing this, Michael?" she asked, her voice barely audible over the roar of the crowd. "Really? It’s not just about the promise you made to yourself when you were nine. There are hundreds of shelters you fund. Why us?"
Michael looked down at her, his dark eyes softening into an expression that sent a strange, unfamiliar flutter through her chest. "Because when I saw you look at your daughters in that dining room, ready to take another blow just to keep them safe... I saw the most courageous person I've ever met. The world doesn't deserve to crush someone like you."
Before she could respond, Arthur Vance signaled them. "It's time. Go out there and turn the tide."
Michael stepped through the curtain first, his large hand extending backward. Eleanor took a deep breath, reached out, and let her fingers wrap around his. His palm was warm, solid, and incredibly steady.
The moment they emerged, the ballroom erupted into a frenzy of shouts and flashing lights.
"Mr. Anders! Over here! Is it true?"
"Are you married, Michael?"
"Mrs. Hayes, did you kidnap your children?"
Michael led Eleanor to the podium, his posture projecting absolute command. He waited for the noise to subside, his eyes sweeping over the press corps until a tense quiet settled over the room.
"Good afternoon," Michael said, his voice echoing clearly through the high-end audio system. "I’ve called this conference today to address the egregious, malicious falsehoods currently being circulated by the Mercer family. For the past year, Eleanor and I have shared a private, deeply personal relationship. Out of respect for her recent grief and our desire to protect her children from the public eye, we chose to keep our love out of the headlines."
A collective gasp rippled through the room.
"Three weeks ago," Michael continued smoothly, "we were legally married in a private, civil ceremony in Vermont. Eleanor is my wife. Grace, Faith, and Hope are my daughters now. The claims made by Lydia Mercer regarding a 'guardianship trust' are not only legally invalid due to our marriage, but they are the desperate fabrications of a family attempting to conceal their own systemic abuse."
A reporter from the Boston Globe stood up immediately. "Mr. Anders, the public has known you for nearly twenty years as a man completely detached from romantic relationships. The press has labeled you... well, the 'virgin billionaire.' Are you asking us to believe you secretly married a maid from the Mercer estate overnight?"
Michael leaned into the microphone, his expression hardening. "I don't care what labels the press invents to sell papers. My private life belongs to me. What I will not tolerate is the exploitation of my family. The Mercer family treated my wife like a slave because she was vulnerable. They used her late husband's debts as a weapon to keep her captive. Yesterday morning, I witnessed Lydia Mercer physically assault my wife in front of her children. We have documented the medical evidence of that abuse, and my legal team has already filed formal criminal charges for assault and battery against Lydia Mercer."
The ballroom broke into chaos again. Reporters were screaming over one another.
"Mrs. Anders! Is this true? Did she hit you?"
Eleanor stepped up to the second microphone, her heart pounding against her ribs. She looked at the sea of predatory faces, then looked at Michael. He gave her a small nod, his eyes filled with absolute belief in her.
"Yes," Eleanor said, her voice clear and resonant, surprising even herself. "For two years, the Mercers kept me in a state of terror. They told me I was nothing. They told me they would use their power to take my children away if I ever complained. But I am not alone anymore. Michael is my husband, and for the first time in two years, my daughters and I are safe."

Watching from a secure television monitor in her mansion, Lydia Mercer threw her teacup against the screen, the porcelain shattering into a hundred pieces over Michael Anders' smiling face.
"Get Charles," she screamed at her assistant, her face distorted with pure malice. "Call the investigators in Boston. I want every single day of Michael Anders' life for the past year dug up. He’s lying. I know he’s lying. And when I find the proof, I will destroy them both."
